an injury because of playing in the rain would really dampen this tournament going forward.

Fun tournament.

Good on Yadi to motion team PR to go out there and congratulate them. Yadi broke my heart in 06, but he is a solid player and I respect the guy.

Why is Bob Costas going on about African-Americans playing baseball during the Dominican Republic's celebration?

They decided to give it back to Dice K again. Joking aside, Robinson Cano ended up winning it. Think he batted over .400.

He's was talking about the Dominican win and how Latin players now make up a big percentage of the MLB, then asked Kaat about how much has changed with that since he played. Then outta nowhere segued into how there's a lack of African-Americans in the MLB cause they all play Basketball or Football instead because it is cheaper to play growing up and they want the exposure in college that those sports have that baseball doesn't or something.

Meanwhile the whole time the DR was celebrating.

Why was he even doing the game anyway? Vasgersian did the whole tournament, and while he's not the greatest, I hate when these "big announcers" just swoop in to do the big game.

The interesting fact that nobody seems to bring up is that the numbers aren't really that shocking. 8% of MLB players (including international players, not just Americans) are African-American. 12% of the general population of the US is African-American. If you only count the percentage of American players that are black you get 11.11% of American MLB players are black.

Yes the numbers are shrinking since the 1960s, but I'm not seeing a huge demographic problem here. This isn't like the NFL coaching ranks, where a sport that is made up by a majority of black players has very few black coaches.

I'd say it's more like the World Championships than the Spengler Cup (it's the B roster filled with apathy and a few C and D squad players instead of the straight D squad roster)...but it's clear that Major League issues take precedent over the tournament and that's inevitably going to hurt the American team more than the others. That and I'm assuming the bulk of Americans don't feel the need to defend our status as the world's best baseball country.

A tournament held in March will never properly say that Mexico, a country with one position player starting in the Majors, is better at baseball than America is. Especially when that same team lost to Italy, a team filled almost exclusively with Americans of Italian heritage, the day before. Iceland beat Italy in soccer not too long ago...

I just don't see any way that this tournament is ever going to be fully realized. You can't play the sport out of season (and Spring Training is effectively out of season because you have pitchers stuck to a pitch limit), but the schedule doesn't allow for a mid-season break to be possible, either. As it stands you have players backing out on the slightest reason and star players declining out of sheer indifference.

I made a semi-joke earlier about half of the Pirates going to the tournament not being from the country they're representing...and that wound up being true since there's only 4 Pirates at the tournament after players declined for every reason ranging from fighting for an outside shot at a roster spot (Iván De Jesus, Jr. was set to be on the Puerto Rico squad) to not wanting to catch this early in Spring Training (Martin...who promptly got hurt after and hasn't actually caught for the Pirates yet either) and covering an injury or two (Ali Solis was to catch for Mexico, but back spasms took him out).

That leaves the Pirates sending just Wandy Rodriguez (legitimate, Dominican Republic), Jason Grilli (of Royal Oak, Michigan playing for Italy), Jameson Taillon (born in Florida, raised in Texas, and never stepped foot in Canada until this past year...oh, and he's represented Team USA before...but at least he's a dual-citizen because his parents are Canadian...but that still bugs me since he never actually spent any time there), and Chris Leroux...who only semi-counts since he's making a start for Team Canada tomorrow (born in Montréal) and then immediately returning to Bradenton to fight for a bullpen spot.
This complaint that went on during the last WBC popped into my head while I've been watching and reading about the World Cup right now. I really don't see how much different the WBC's rules were compared to FIFA's.
