Capt'n OTT

I, like many others on this board, have repeatedly said Steve Ott really should wear the "C" for the Sabres.

Granted, none of us are "in the room" as it were, so we're really just going by the fact that Ott:

--is very passionate
--puts his passion into results on the ice
--is very articulate in interviews about team play.
--seems to be the kinda guy to get in fellow players faces when they're not carrying their weight.

HOWEVER...

This morning, one of the guys on WGR made a comment about why Ott should NOT be captain...and it actually made some sense.

"He chirps at other players too much."

If you think about it, do you really want your captain being "that" guy? He really does do it constantly. Shouldn't the captain be a bit more...I don't know....dignified?

It would be very odd and kind of pathetic for the Sabres to appoint a player like Steve Ott as captain, a third line grinder and a player whose reputation around the league is only a notch above Pat Kaleta's.

Ott plays with passion and feistiness. That we don't have ONE player in our Top 6 forwards or Top 4 defencemen with the kind of personality or leadership qualities a good captain should have is a condemnation of the GM and his team.

When you have to consider a player off the third line to be your captain you know you have deep problems.

I wouldn't mind seeing him get an "A". As far as him getting the "C"....only way that would happen is if Poms is traded or not re-signed next year.

The 2013-14 team could end up being a team with three "A"'s and no "C" if Poms is traded.
If Poms stays until his contract expires and doesn't re-sign, the 2014-15 "C" may be ready to go to Hodgson by then. Or hell, maybe even Vanek, if he's still around. But no, I don't view Ott as Captain material.

I could see Ott getting the A. As much as he brings to a team, he is not C material.

No thanks. I like the fire and competitiveness he brings, but he acts like a jackass too much to be a captain. Oh, and can you imagine if Drew Stafford, Jochen Hecht, or Derek Roy ever watched Tyler Ennis get boarded badly TWICE, and did absolutely nothing about it just like Ott did in the Rangers and Flyers games? There'd be a riot in here. (Not that I expected people on the board to apply the same standard to everyone. Free passes are plentiful in here.)

I'd consider an "A" but not the "C". No way.

I'm glad Ott had a really nice game yesterday while a few GM's were in the building. If we could get good value for him, I'd be pumped.

Maybe we could trade him for another Tyler Ennis

If we were lucky. It sure wouldn't suck to have a little more skill on this team.

Players like Ott aren't given captaincy.

He's not a captain. And yes he chirps at players. So what? So do you're Richards or Carter type guys. Maybe whine more to the refs that chirp at players but Ott doesn't have the skill set to be a captain.
However he certainly deserves an A a hell of a lot more than the guy on the fourth line making what 4.5 mil that is currently wearing it.

We don't have one and we haven't had one since 2007.

We already went that route with midgets who have "skill", but get rubbed out and disappear when needed. No thanks

If Jake McCabe pans out he is the natural leader type, but that's wayy down the road.

Ott chirping constantly is just not what NHL captains are made of.

Love his spirit though.

He doesn't need a letter to be leader on this team. Plus without the letter he can continue playing the way he plays. I really don't see a reason to put one on him.

I'd rather see Ott with an A than Stafford

There are plenty of chirpy captains around the league.

Crosby is the posterchild for this.

Crosby is not on the level of Ott's antics. Not even close.
