Or the LA model -- develop and retain one's own high-end draft picks, use said assets to improve in areas of weakness if not in one's own lineup. Similar to what Anaheim did, parrallels can be drawn to many teams building and augmenting their core with high-end drafted talent. The Pens are not the only team to use excellent drafting in the midst of a bad stretch of hockey (regardless of how they got there, their circumstances or causes) to build their base talent level.

I was going to list the Ducks and Vancouver too, but yeah, it's not limited to one team, it is repeatable, and it does yield positive results, especially in conjunction with smart management and committed ownership (halfway there).

On the bright side, I think by the end of this season we're 50-75% through the crap phase of the rebuild (I think it starts with Girgs and Grigs). I mean, we're already halfway there. We're getting through it as we speak.
