You can't compare Alfie and Silfverberg's SEL years. These days rhere are lots of more players playing outside Sweden than when Alfie was young. SEL is a bit watered these days.

They were prospects back then...a lot like Silfverberg. Goalies are better, systems are better and a lot of the highly skilled guys that can't handle the physical game from NA play in the SEL now too.

I don't think it's really fair to discredit what Silfverberg did by saying the league is weaker. I don't think that's true.

As I've pointed out before in this thread that's a terrible point. The SEL is better then it has ever been.

Yes in the the early 90s we had Forsberg, Näslund and Alfie but i would go as far as saying the SEL was a semi-professional league back then (many players had other jobs to support themselves)- can't even compare it to what it is today.

Also, the assumption that if a higher number of Swedes play outside the country the quality must automatically drop in Sweden is flawed. We have a lot more resources and commitment in youth hockey today and therefore produce a significantly higher number of quality players than we did 20 years ago.

You are out bicycling as we say in Sweden

I love it.

Also Silfverberg just keeps improving every game. It will be interesting to see what kind of season he can have next year now that he knows what he needs to prepare for and improve on.

And you knew exactly who those two guys were before they came over to the NHL? Wait a 5 years or more and then decide if Silfverberg faced any future elite NHLers while in the SEL.

Dont know about you guys.

But i see silferberg in becoming an animal. Probably the best release and shot i have seen on a swede in my 30 years of hockey. might be sweden answer for a legit goal scorer. as he's feeling more comfortable with the game he is slowly starting to dictate the game on what he wants to do on the ice. im not even an ott fan but i see a release like that and that has goal scorer written all over it. you cant stop what you cant see or catch.

im i wearing silferberg colored glasses or do other people see something special in him like i do?

Nope, I see something special too. Not just his shot. What is underrated about Silfverberg is his playmaking ability. He freezes defenders so elegantly because they have to respect his shot and he makes crisp passes.

Agreed. 25 years of watching and I haven't see someone snap the puck like that since Brett Hull.

I just say Silfverberg is not a better player than Alfie at same age. No matter how good SEL season Silfv had. Did not mean to start a debate how good or bad Different eras of SEL.

a lot has changed in the hockey development world in the last 20 years which effected every nations development approach and the hormone infused beef, chicken and dairy products also help with size and strength. Unless your a man child or a phenom, you're going to crack the nhl these days at about 20-21.

No it's no secret around these parts, or more importantly in the organization. The first 3 shootout goals Silf had this year were all quick bullet shots to the same spot.

And there was an article in a local rag last year where Luke Richardson talked about Silf's shootout move. They asked him if it was a good idea to "give away his secret," and Luke said something to the effect that it didn't matter because even when you know it's coming he scores anyway.

And you see him freeze the goalie every time because his release is just lightning quick. Check him out vs Brodeur, who's not exactly a slouch in goal

We'll agree to disagree. Silfverberg was the best player in the entire SEL and has won everything there is to win in that league at an age where Alfredsson was putting up a respectable 30 points in 39 games. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Silfverberg put up 60 points next year the way he has looked lately.

Wut?

What's wrong with comparing a young Swedish talent to another great Swede winding down his accomplished career? Esp with the whole "reminds me of me" thing...

You're out bicycling too.

we should have an hf get together where we all go out bicycling.

or we could, you know, just head on over to the trade thread/board.
that would work too.
