Per nhltraderumors.com which is a website that uploads a lot of media tweets as well as journalists writings about trade rumors around the NHL, it says that;
1) Paul Gaustad may be available
2) We are looking for offense (duh!)
3) Also looking to add defense
On the defensive note it is saying Leopold and Regehr are the names from Buffalo we may be looking at. Also, Drew Stafford was a name that popped up
It said Gaustad would be a good fit for Boston.
Don't really think we would trade Goose but one of those d-men may be nice alongside Shea.
Still don't know what we should do as far as offensive guys.
Also, the website says that trade rumors are swirling CGY and on the block are Iginla, JBo, Babchuk, Cammallerri, Kipper, and Sarich. The only guy with a NMC is Kipper and we'd obviously not be interested in him.
So with that said, are we rebuilding or do you think with the points being so close that Poile would try buy as well as sell and make wholesale improvements.
i believe that a loss Thursday against the flames at home will all but guarantee us as sellers at the deadline. not sure about your website you are citing, but id think there would be a number of guys traded before gaustad.
If/when we're sellers, I don't see a greater return than decent draft picks for anyone we'd sell off, which is fine by me. I'm ready to see what the kids can do.
I think Poile is going to end up being a seller this time. Who do people think 'will' be moved from the team? I know the ones people want gone, but what pieces do the Preds have that will be able to be moved and other teams will give up their picks etc. for? It seems like to me the people we could move wouldn't hold much value to teams looking to make their playoff run. Thoughts?
I know some will disagree but I do not want to sell Fisher, Weber and Rinne are untouchable. I would like to keep Wilson, Gabi, Josi, Smith, Ellis and Bartley. Maybe Horny and Erat. Everyone else is available for picks or trade!
Weber, Rinne, Josi, Klein, Ellis, Wilson, Bork, Smith, Horny - not going anywhere at trade deadline. Leggy and Erat and Fish all have contracts that keep them here, I believe, but I think any of them would make good pieces to move if they'd waive their NTC/NMCs. Goose/Gill if they healthy might bring decent return and definitely should be available.
the rest - I doubt Barkley is going anywhere because I don't think we want to go into next year with only 5 dmen and Gill being one of them; would require Poile to go get a proven guy and with our pipeline coming we'd end up with a Hannan caretaker signing at best. beyond that, any of them could go for picks, but I'm not sure we got the horses to bring more than a mid-level pick; we need Blum and SK to have some really good games this homestand.
I could see off-season deals with guy like Smith or Horny or even Ellis (depending how the rest of D shakes out) but I don't see those making sense at the deadline.
All of this speculation is moot - we're gonna' win these next 4 at home and look like we're still competitive, just not enough to acquire a long-term asset, but enough not to dump.
I think it's time for a reasonably big sale. I'm a pretty patient person; we don't need a full rebuild, but our offense has systemic issues that cannot be fixed with a piece or two. Gill / SK / Legwand / Hannan at the least should be moved at the deadline. Gaustad is another option; faceoff wins are more highly valued in the playoffs. Blum is a piece that will have to be moved for anything of significant value. Do not move Erat; one off year and moving him would be a terrible mistake. He has been the most consistent forward on the Preds over the last several years.
I highly advise against trading for a Gaborik type player. Our best forwards are all relatively young; acquire more young talent and build a sustainable pipeline that does not require us to offload a key piece like Bourque or Hornqvist.
Take young talent or draft picks then deal with ~2 years of mediocrity before coming back as a new team. It sucks, but it really has to be done. We should be able to retain Josi / Ellis / Ekholm into said new era and we have Kleiner / Weber / Rinne locked up. It's not a terrible position, you just need to commit to it and realize a Cup win is not in the near-term.
