But seriously, my point was just hinged on the fact we're a different team, now fairly used to Carlyle's system and we may be better served spreading the OFD's out, even Liles on the 3rd pairing.

The notion that either don't make a good pairing simply because they are offensive minded is non sense.

Neither will crush someone through the boards, but both can move the puck really well and they are very mobile, therefore can cover each other well enough.

The reason why I brought up last year was to prove that he has played in that position, with both Franson and Liles, so it's not like he's thrown with someone that he hasn't played with.

But since you are so focused about tonight and onward, Franson and Fraser have been a good tandem and breaking them wasn't an option. Then you have Gunnarsson or Gardiner to play with Phaneuf. One is just coming back from the AHL, the other can be considered a veteran at this point.

With 4 defenseman that can be considered offensive oriented --- Phaneuf, Franson, Liles and Gardiner, you are bound to have 2 paired together.

So I think right now it's just a matter of getting Gardiner back in the lineup without having to play 25 minutes while paired with Phaneuf, and face the top opposition from the other team --- aka Team Stamkos.

Give him time to get back to his NHL form before causing a scene.

I said Liles with Phaneuf, not Gardiner. I said Gardiner on the 2nd pairing, with Gunnar is fine to me (it gives him less TOI as well, which I think he needs).

On hockeycentral or one of their intermission shows they were talking about who Gradiner would be playing with. Doug M and Kyper both said they said he could not play with Phaneuf. Anyone have any insight as to why Gards and Phaneuf cannot play together? Thanks

Phaneuf usually plays against the opponent's top lines. Giving Gards sheltered minutes...not the minutes Kostka and Holger were exposed to Look at what happened to those 2...also playing with Phaneuf is no picnic.

Just last season. Went 4-0 against them as a matter of fact.

Winnipeg was even a bigger game, we all saw that performance they put on in the second period.

Thanks for the reply.

How sad is it that our $6+ million man and captain is so bad that he actually makes players almost worse? Just watching him play he tends to just stand in front of the net and float in our zone to the side the puck is on. Would it kill him to move his feet and maybe jump into the play for once and help create an odd man rush? IMO he should be as good as gone once he's up for renewal. Top d-men should make people around them better, not the other way around. Rant ended.

It's not sad. It sounds more like you don't understand what you're watching.

Phaneuf made Aulie, Gunnar, kostka. All were AHL dmen.

Give him a real partner and he will play like Weber.

i think phanuef plays his best hockey when he has an assignment. i.e. shutdown taveres, crosby, clarkson.

that might be stating the obvious tho.

Being put on the top line in your first NHL game in a while wouldn't seem like the greatest decision in my eyes. Phaneuf is regularly matched up against their top lines and tonight will be against Stamkos once again. I doubt Gardiner can keep up defensively right off the bat against one of the best scorers in the league.

I'd rather play Gardiner with someone like Gunnarsson or Fraser and play those sheltered minutes 5 on 5 while playing on the second powerplay unit.
