John McDonald traded to the Pirates for a handshake right after Chase d'Arnaud goes down with a thumb injury that'll cost him 6-8 weeks...apparently the difference between Chase d'Arnaud and Ivan De Jesus, Jr. is worth an extra $1 million in salary, even if it'd only be for less than two months.

Cardinals cut Ronny Cedeno yesterday. I thought he'd be decent MIF depth but they decided to go with Kozma/Descalso with Ryan Jackson, Greg Garcia or a trade being the backup plans.

Is Chase D'Arnaud related to Travis D'Arnaud?

Quote from Matheny:

Quote:
I think most of our pitchers are poor evaluators of themselves and their stuff, especially the young pitchers. A great example I gave to Joe the other day was Jason Marquis.

He could throw 96 and he loved throwing it past people. But it didn’t happen all that much. Dunc (pitching coach Dave Duncan) continued to work on him and he wasn’t all that cooperative. But (Duncan) got him to believe there is a beauty in pitching to contact and being an efficient ground-ball pitcher.

The next thing you know is that 10 years later, the guy is still throwing sinkers. And Joe still has to figure that out for himself. We can give him what we think but if he doesn't buy into it, we’re all wasting our time.
Signs all point to Miller being the 5th starter after these comments

Why use Marquis as an example? He's been a mediocre to bad pitcher his whole career.

I remember few years ago when Jason Marquis won 9 or 10 games in 1st half and ESPN had him as one of the Cy Young contenders.

what's funny about marquis's's career is that his best season was in 2009, where he pitched 216 innings of 4.04 era baseball for the rockies. and he did really well in coors. a .700 ops v. at home against a .748 ops on the road. he gave up 29 xbh in 105 innings in coors.

i'm actually impressed with that. he's a ****** pitcher otherwise.

I think his 2004 was better.

more strikeouts, sure. an era a third of a run lower. i think his 2009 where he "mastered" coors field and gave 216 innings of 4 era baseball, half of which took place in colorado, is more impressive.

we're comparing piles of junk.

I couldn't care less as long as the A's take the West again.

What about Broxton? Didn't they just give him a new contract? Fail.

Nothing wrong with insurance/depth. Guess they were tired of handing Sean Marshall the ball late in games.

Not looking good for Roy Halladay. Blue Jays minor leaguers went 7 for 14, 1 HBP, 2 walks over 4 innings, and they didn't even finish the 1st inning.

tuned into the 8th inning of this cards/marlins game.

hard to tell whether or not the marlins have the scrubs in now or their starters are playing the whole game.
