Loui gets quite a few of his assists in a similar secondary fashion, winning puck battles and distributing. That is a skill and a pretty important one to boot.

Edit: Did the research...4 of his 5 assists are primary. Your point is invalid.
And now I have been wrong twice

I guess his assists just don't really stand out to me. Also I totally agree about his ability to win puck battles, but I consider that to be defense rather than offense. It seems like those points come from turnovers forced in the offensive zone rather than breakouts; in the 2 spot I prefer somebody like Roy who can drive the action more. Of course I could have misremembered that too since the last few games of 3rd line Eakin are at the forefront of my reasoning.

You are not quite wrong as at least two of his assists came from passing to Ryder who sniped it at incredible precision. Few if any players can do that, if it was Stamkos that shot would most likely not be avaliable but basically what I'm saying is that if it was any one besides Ryder that one pass may not be a goal.

However I thought you guys got a great player in that trade. Basically a bluechip prospect who I've compared to Patrice Bergeron.

Bergeron is a 20-25 and 40-45 assist player but I think Eakin will score almost as much goals as assists because of his amazing shot, which he hasn't used that often aside from hitting that post.

I guess we just look at the game differently. I don't break things down so far as to consider offense and defense as opposites. I could use your logic and call puck battles won and turnovers created in the defensive zone creating offense when you retain control of the puck and push up the ice. It's all in how you look at it. The guy plays a complete game with a style somewhere between Zetterberg/Datsyuk/Bergeron/M. Koivu. I'm not directly comparing future success with those players but just style-wise he plays a complete game end to end. I'm looking forward to the day we get to rely on him in the playoffs.

A thinking man's two-way game. If we could manage it politically in the locker room, I would really like to see Cody and Loui paired up for a long stretch. I feel like they think the game in similar ways. Paired with Ryder, it could be formidable.

This is a great point. Pair two of the headiest players on the team and just tell them to play hockey. I'm hoping we see this for long stretches in the future.

I just wanted to bring this back up. I really love the tenacity Eakin plays with, his ability to play up and down the lineup and be effective in any role. I was worried when the trade first happened for Ribeiro, but I think he's been a great addition to the team's core moving forward.

I always thought he is Mister nice guy but since the game vs Flames I saw his evil side. 1st fight against Iginla then the hip check against Stajan. I have to admit I like this guy more and more.

That's pretty awesome.

And yeah, he does have a physical side that surfaces from time to time. He occasionally looks for the big hit actually kinda in the same way that Ribs did. Of course he's more capable of delivering one.
