St. Louis - Richards - Nash
Hagelin - Stepan - Gaborik
Kreider - Miller - Callahan
Pyatt - Boyle - Powe/Asham

*drool*
5,625,000 cap hit. I actually did this for next year WITH Gaborik (adding HOrton at 5M) with Mcdonagh getting 4M, Hags 2.5 and Stepan 3, and we were barely over the cap by about 2.5M WITH Gaborik. I'm sure we could make it happen IF he were available.

The way Carter is playing with Richards, no chance.

Carter is scoring but only has 3 assists. Richards is 7-13 in 29 games. Nothing really earth shattering.

You are 2 players short, 13th forward and 7th D.
That's at least another 1.5M

Edit: If you trade Boyle, you have to replace him.

Thats also with Mcdonagh with 4M which I don't think he'll get at the moment. I'm not sure he gets more than Staal per year unless he gets an OS. It would be VERY tight but with some creativity might be possible.

It'll be close
3.67M over
There are some savings
Shave .5M from Hagelin, Stepan and McD, that's 1.5M. Biron is not coming back, a rook will replace him for .75M, savings of .75M
Trade Pyatt for pick, and get a rook to replace him, another .8M saved.
3.67 - 3.07 = 600K over and that's with bare minimum line up and assuming best scenario for the RFA's.
Not realistic IMO.

Good luck with that. Gaborik has a high cap hit and will be a UFA after next season. Why would the Kimgs do that? This isn't Bob Gainey that the Rangers could take advantage of.

Carter's job is to score goals, Richards is the setup guy and I don't see your point that those totals aren't earth shattering as if that's a reason why he would be traded for Gaborik which in no way would ever happen.

Somebody should make a poll about whether Gaborik should be traded.

Power forwards are terrific assets to have, but the problem with most of them is they tend to be inefficient. A lot of shots, a lot of penalty minutes. PFs have drawbacks, and no team is going to win if their best players are these guys (unless you're talking about the elite playmaking type, like Getz and Lindros).

Most power forwards are ideally your complimentary players. Your #2 or #3 options on offense. If you sacrifice a lot to get a power forward through salary or trade (like, say the Rangers overpaid to get Nash, who is surely one of the best power forwards in the league, but he's not on the level of a Getzlaf), you have a problem. Eric Staal is overpaid, IMO. I know he's having a great season, but he's not a consistent superstar, yet he's paid like he's one of the best. Rick Nash, same thing. You put yourself in a less than desirable position sacrificing a large portion of your cap to players who ultimately are not the most important piece of the puzzle. Your top line playmaker (usually center) has to be the number one offensive player on your team, even if he isn't the top pointgetter.

In many ways, power forwards are about as valuable as one-dimensional snipers like Gaborik. They can't be the guy on your team that carries the puck the most.

The Rangers will go as far as Brad Richards' play ultimately takes them. It's imperative for him to start playing better, as it's unrealistic to expect Stepan to maintain his current form for the rest of the season (hopefully he does, though). Richards has to be the key, because Nash and/or Gaborik are a lot better depending on how well Richards plays.

The thing about all this trade talk is that it doesn't mean diddly squat unless Richards picks up his game. It'd be nice to fill the holes on the blueline and bottom 6, but that won't take this team to the Finals. What matters far more is Richards playing better, which will make Gaborik play better, and that is more valuable than anything we can acquire in a trade.

That's why I think it's foolish to move Gaborik now unless you're getting a really good return. If Richards and him don't start playing better, the team isn't going to get that far this season, anyway. We already have a great power forward in Nash, who eats up a ton of cap space. We also have Callahan, who plays like a power forward, and is far more efficient and better at everything other than scoring than virtually every big name power forward in the league. He keeps getting better and better offensively, too.
This is exactly right!

I want the Brad Richards that played for the Dallas Stars. I loved that player. I'm still holding out hope he can regain his form. I agree with you that he is probably the most important player to our success. With him under performing, our team will under perform (as evidenced by the beginning of our season).

Aside from the interesting take on Power Forwards. This was my favorite part of this post. The team is in dire need of offense. Richards is stuck here and Gaborik's cap hit will keep Sather from reaping the benefits of some vast over-payment. Like I said in previous trade threads, I do think this team can succeed. We've looked ugly so far but that's with our offensive load being carried by Nash, Hagelin, Stepan and Callahan. Both Gaborik and Richards are not even a year removed from extremely effective seasons and I'm willing to bet that they'll find their game again.

Send down Miller for a White. He Will be back for playoff duty
Trade one of Gilroy or Eminger asap ( or waive if no trade is possible) for 7th rounder in order to Free up a roster spot - #48
Sign Zuccarello 2 year 1,5 m deal - spot #49
Sign Dekeyser or Sustr ( probably having to burn a contract year now though) - spot #50
Maybe Trade Taylor Pyatt to Phoenix for Rafi Torres for some grit
Await the trade deadline to see what interesting can come along then. Do not go crazy if prices then escalate out of control... adress teams needs (grit, depth, PPQB) with trading prospects/picks and not taking on Contract years or money. Rental(s) is probably the Word.
No?

Kreider - Richards - Gaborik
Hagelin - Stepan - Nash
Zuccarello - Boyle - Callahan
Powell/Asham - Halpern - Torres

McD - Girardi
MDZ - Stralman
Hamrlik - One of remaining Eminger\Gilroy
Bickel

Staal also then slots in nicely When he returns healthy

I like your no big move mentality and the proposed players, however, I'd focus on getting Boyle to 4C and find a more skilled replacement for that spot.

Yeah, you need to look at those numbers again. I showed why your numbers were off. We were actually 3.7 mil over and had no spare forwards or dmen. The numbers don't work for next year.

Pages and pages of Gaborik trade talk (and fan-generated proposals that will never happen in a thousand years BTW), and nobody seems to remember that the guy who makes the trades is old as balls and set in his ways.

When was the last time Sather traded a superstar/scoring forward for anything? (2004 fire sale notwithstanding)

Trading/signing for superstars is his motif, not trading them away.

Nash
Gaborik
lindros
Bure
Jagr
Kovalev

Sather loves skill. Duh. He's traded for guys five years removed from 30 goal seasons, yet according to some of you, he's magically going to ignore his tenets and trade away a guy 8 months removed from a 2nd 40-plus season in three years.

And when he did/forced to trade goal scorers (mainly on the Oilers) he always wanted established skill in return.

Guerin for Arnott
Tikkanen for Weight
Todd for Nicholls
Messier for Nicholls
Damphousse for Corson
Gretzky for Carson
Klima and Murphy for Carson
Damphousse for Anderson

I'm not Glen Sather, but like Patton says to Rommel, I read his ******* book.

There's no way Gaborik gets traded, and if the stars align and Sather's on acid, even then, he wont do it for 3rd liners, picks and prospects

The mix of talent is just not working. Richards and Gaborik are too soft and ineffective. If they can find a decent package for Gaborik at the deadline that addresses some depth both on the blue-line and at forward I pull the trigger. However, moving forward, the Rangers have some options coming up through the system:

Hrivik
Fasth
Lindberg
Thomas
McIlrath

And that is not including Kreider + Miller.

I would say that within the next year and a half we will see the next wave of players like we saw when Callahan and Dubinsky came up.

Staal was not arbitration eligible in the summer of 10. McDonagh is arbitration eligible this July.
