It's south-bound between Millet and Wetaskiwin.

The only fail in this is not properly recognizing winter conditions, extreme storm advisories and the concept of a snowday. Highway driving was going to be brutal today, this is a given. So stay home unless its an absolute emergency. Certainly stay off of highways unless its absolutely necessary.

Snowday needs to be revisited bigtime. I would imagine with the advent of snowtires, traction, abs, 4 X 4 it all just means more people using highways thinking they are invincible. Fact of the matter is in a collision like this you're not safe unless you're staying at home watching this on the news. ANY technology doesn't save you from a collision like this. If you stop in time somebody behind you doesn't and you get thrown into the fray. Theres few answers to this kind of hazard and it can be there around any bend or the crest of any hill.

Could it have something to do with so many people having jacked up trucks thinking ice has no effect on them at all?

I'm 26 years old and I've lived in Edmonton my entire life. I don't recall there being a snow day even once.

We've been absolutely pummeled by snow storms in my day... they NEVER shut it down. I don't get it.

We don't even get anywhere near the same amount of snow like we used too.I remember the 1980's having double the amount of snow compared to now.

WE had more snow accumulation. We now have more melt/freeze cycles now resulting in less accumulation, but denser pack and intermittent runoff.

Temps being somewhat warmer, and with chinook type conditions influencing farther north, the snow just doesn't stick around the same way it used to.

We've had a good amount of snow this year. Without melts and thawoffs we'd be staring at huge amounts of accumulated piles of the stuff.

I really can't handle this much snow anymore, I want to golf soon. We will be lucky to have a round in Edmonton in April this year.

I am going to change my avatar too.

Its the work province mode and EVERYBODY working. The concept of snowday was typically a school event. You'd have 1 or 2 almost every year in the 60's 70's. Then, with two parent working families schools suddenly got BLASTED if they ever even mention for kids to stay home as schools are now seen as daycares of sorts. used to be you could send kids home or advise them not to come to school. There would be reports on the radio, TV, etc. "snowday, keep kids home, school buses not running"

This is no longer the case now.

I shudder to think what happens here when we get a perfect storm blizzard. Weather is getting more and more extreme. I don't know if it takes an event where a 100K people are hopelessly stranded to get the message. Driving on highways today for any reason other than emergency is foolish.

One thing I hate about the Henday is that you get news stories like this and they never give enough details. Are they shutting down the entire Henday drive or just a section? It's always a problem when they say there is an accident on it but they rarely say which side of the city it's on, you're lucky if you get direction info like northbound or southbound.
