Worst Hockey List Ever

Michael Farber has compiled a list of the 10 most embarassing moments in NHL history (Farber). I'm embarassed for him in that he cites it was hard to stop at 10 because his paycheck is derived from covering the "embarassing" league. Despite the irony of the motivation for the column is that he never even came close to getting them right.

For starters, I would rank the cancellation of a season as the Number 1 embarassment. The Lindros trade to the Rangers and the Flyers that an arbitrator had to untangle has to make a top 10 list. As does Mike Milbury heading into the stands to beat a fan (deserving or not) with his own shoe. Feel free to add on ...

Not to be outdone, Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun scammed the article (Hornby) where it is now posted on Canoe. This poor excuse for a journalist could not even summarize Farber's article correctly. His motivation for his rehash, other than laziness and incompetence, is because no Leafs related episode made the list. At number 10, he cannot even paraphrase that the Canadiens went on to win their fourth consecutive Cup in 1979 as opposed to their fourth Cup ever!

Does anyone have a video of this?

Quote:
6. Patrick Roy's Statue of Liberty: May 29, 2002

Give us your tired, your poor, your cheapest of cheap goals. In Game 6 of the 2002 semifinals between Roy's Colorado Avalanche and the archrival Detroit Red Wings, Roy made a nifty glove save on Steve Yzerman early in the match. Then, as was his wont, Roy added a grace note, brandishing his glove like it was Lady Liberty's torch. The problem: When the most winning goaltender in the history of the NHL raised his trapper to show the Wings and the world his swell save, the puck tumbled out and trickled into his own net.

Fill in your own French's mustard joke here.

The Avalanche would go on to lose 2-0, then capitulated 7-0 in Game 7 as the Wings went on to defeat Carolina handily in the final.

How about Kerry Fraser vs. Therrien and Savard coming down from the press box to smack Fraser with the rulebook. Or the Devils coach (skinny old guy with glasses and short blonde hair, forgot his name) and former bruins coach in 2002 throwing the players bench on the ice after a tantrum?

"Ottawa Appologizes" and "Have Another Donut, You Fat Pig" are one-liners I'll have to remember for the season

Bertuzzi incident

Hunter hitting Turgeon with his stick ( broken bone ) even if the play was stopped for 5-10 seconds .

Not exactly for the NHL , but i think that my number one would be when Phil Esposito broke the ankle bone of the best russian player , during the first Russian-Canada meeting . It was very clear that the move was made to injured seriously the player .

Are you thinking of the Bobby Clarke incident mentioned in the article?

I never heard of Esposito doing anything like that, but maybe he did?

I wrote and gave the guy an earful. Farber's a hack of a hockey journalist in the first place, and writing that article just incensed me. I know he'll never read it, but nonetheless I felt I had to say something.

A couple of others I would have mentioned:

- The Roy-Tremblay fiasco in '96
- Totally agree on the Hunter-Turgeon thing in '93. How can he mention the other two and forget Turgeon (which is arguably worse considering that it was in the playoffs to the Isle's best player as opposed to Brashear and Moore in the regular season).
- Chris Chelios threatening the life of Gary Bettman during labour negotiations.
- Go ahead and pick a Jeremy Roenek or Brett Hull moment of your choice.
- Our favourite nut Mike Danton

You know, just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are much better examples out there

You can criticize any of those moments because they're Americans (Hunter, Chelios, Roenik, Hull) and SI is a homer organization. Farber's editor never would have signed off.

Anyway, I can think of a hundred things in other sports are equally or more embarassing, but don't get publicity because it's not on the agenda. Hockey will forever be treated like a goofy cousin sport so long as journalists like Farber have jobs (or their editors continue to ask for such material).

[edit] I mean nationally syndicated journalists.

by the way , i just remember that during the famous tournement betwen Canada - Russia , the players did the party in the hotel a couple of time , and showed that they were a bunch of classless peoples ;not sure but i thing that it was during that cup that they broke a lot of the hotel dishes for the fun of it , without realising that they were antique plates ( porcelaine de Seve ? ) .

On the other side , the Russians were playing on the nerves of all the delaguation , because they menaced to put an end to the tournements plenty of time . For a yes or for a no , the coache was asking to his players to return to the bench , or to the players room .

No the Messier elbow on that Russian was much worse. A very dirty move by a guy who always played that kind of a game against weaker players. Espo's wasn't a classy move either, but you have to remember that first Canada Russian series the Russians put on a stickwork clinic.

My number one pick was Disney naming their club the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. If Michael Eisner had tried to pull that with MLB and bringing in a Bad News Bears team he would have had Steinbrenner's foot so far up his a$$ he would spit shoelaces.

How Chelios never got a suspension for that, I'll never know. Bryan McCabe's quotes weren't the most defamation free either.

You're quite right in that the American NHL professionals (Roenick, Hull et al.)thrashing of the Olympic Village dorms was a very embarassing low.

Danton was really a non-NHL travesty so I'll give that one a pass.

What about the USA Womens team walking on the Canadian flag in their dressing room? Guess that's not the NHL though... nevermind.
