Yzerman says plains for Sustr to join Lightning after the road trip for practices and evaluation. NHL games not guaranteed in contract.
I'm excited to see him but get Sustr down to Cooper and Zettler ASAP.

No NHL games guarantee in his contract. He can play in SYR. Meeting with team in Tampa to evaluate where he's going to play apparently. Yzerman.

Very true, but we'll need quite a bit of a luck as our odds will likely not be as high and only one team gets the opportunity to "win" the draft and move up.

How did we get him without an NHL games guarantee? Jedi.

Does that allow us to offer an NHL guarantee to DeKeyser now?

If we get DeKeyser, we better brace ourselves. Detroit fans are going to be PISSSSSED!

We almost got Brunner, Gave them Quincey for a Their first, which we know how that worked out, and then take DeKeyser from them...This would all be in what a year and half? Instant rivals for us in our division.

J.T. Brown and now Sustr. That's 2 very sought after college FAs snatched by Yzerman. Don't doubt the Yzerman effect.

Nice to sign Sustr - better to sign DeKeyser.

I'll wait until I see him play...I still have nightmares of Vladimir Mihalik playing D....big, tall pylon with zero skating ability and no vision.

He's gonna get smoked so hard by NHL forwards I'm thinking. He could learn a ton in the AHL though.

I don't know, I was a lot more enthusiastic when I first heard about him signing. Now I'm wondering why he was never drafted. I know we have a good track record with undrafted prospects, but most of those were undrafted because they were considered too small. This guy has size and apparently isn't a bad passer, so what is it that made 30 teams pass over him with 500+ picks?

Harder to project big boys until they're around his age.

Worth noting that he was born in November of 1990, making him about a month older than Hedman. As a foreigner who went the NCAA route, I'm guessing not a whole lot was known about him back when he was draft-eligible, which was quite some time ago.

Really, I think he COULD be a basically what we had hoped Aulie would be (but isn't and doesn't look like he'll reach) - a guy that can be a #4 defender that you can use for ES/PK time and maybe PP once in a while. Maybe more, i'm sure depending on whos scouting him. The thing he has going for him is obviously his giant reach and smarts, and hes not a big risk taker. I wouldn't say its easy to look good at the NCAA level all the time, but he came close to doing it. Always seemed to be in the right place and makes good passes.
Your giving up on Aulie already? He has been our most physical defender all year, been playing more PK time and has chipped in some offensively. He should be ahead of Brewer on the depth chart.
Sustr is a completely different player than him, more of a giant Carle with a better shot.

I doubt you'll have to worry about that. Sustr's noted to be a decent skater with good vision, passing and a hard, accurate shot.

Stronger on his stick and more crisp with his passing too.

I haven't given up, but i'm losing hope. Brewer can keep up with or near NHL forwards, Aulie finds himself getting skated around lately, physical or not.

I wasn't trying to compare him to aulie as much as I was comparing the role we hoped Aulie would have at this point in the season.

He looked really good this summer at the prospects camp. His puck handling often made the forwards look silly, he has great agility. His offensive instincts and skills were already above NHL average. I couldn't tell much about his defensive play in scrimmages, but he appears to be a smart young man, which is important in defensive anticipation. He is a RHD, which we had a strong need for. If we are out of the playoff race by April 3, the AHLers will go back for their playoff run and perhaps Sustr will get some games here with us. Welcome.

I say you give him his evaluation and then you park him with Cooper in Syracuse.

Dekeyser is more NHL ready, you guarantee him NHL time to try and secure the contract.

If you get Dekeyser, you send Gudas and Sustr to Syracuse to bolster the lineup for the playoffs. They may also add Witowski and Sergeev to the team.

i don't understand the hype surroundig this player, except that he is 6'8 tall. According to different reviews, he's an average skater, limited offensively, not using his body enough, with an average shot. Tampa and the Pens didn't offered him a contract last year. I understood the hype around Justin Schultz last year, but around this guy?

Sustr made it very clear that he was going to return to Nebraska-Omaha...he seemed to like the concept of playing college hockey more than playing minor league hockey. Plenty of college players do the same thing.

Maybe Sustr turns into nothing...but he looked good in those camps, had a very solid season, and he's huge and can somewhat skate for someone that big. He may not be Kris Letang on his feet, but he's not Hal Gill either. Tampa added an asset without having to give up anything to acquire him...it's the same reason every college free agent gets over-hyped.
