Weber contract discussion (RFA after this year)

Weber will be a restricted free agent after the year, as far as I can tell.

I've been happy with him to date. He hasn't been a standout, but he has grown up a bit in terms of finding his role and playing within it. Given his play this year, and the fact that - in comparison to the rest of the unit - he brings a bit of some things we don't have much of (physicality, PKing ability, willingness to block shots, occasional scrap), what kind of deal would you offer him?

I really think the Sabres are going to trade Pommer before the season is over and we will get a 3 or 4 D as part of the package back. If that is the case you have 57-10, 44-whomever we get. That makes Weber a 5 or 6 which he should be and will get some raise but IMO somewhere around $1.5/yr? Maybe a little less?

I wouldn't go much over that $1.5m number, and I wouldn't offer more than two years. Heck, if his stock around the league is up, and a team thinks he'd be a nice secondary piece to Vanek/Poms/Miller/Stafford, he should be on the table. But he's been much better this season.

I want to keep him...

In a season with very few bright spots, he's been one of them

He may be a career 3rd pairing/PK defensemen... but he's demonstrated enough to show me that he will be a career NHLer. He brings some of the qualities we always whine about lacking.

3 yrs / 7 million / 2.333 per

Right in the middle $2 mil per year average for 3 years seems right to me.

2 years, 1.5 million per. He's still a bottom pairing guy in the league and should be paid as such.

I would try to sign him for up until he's a UFA (not sure if that's 2 or 3 years) in the 1.5 mil range. If 3 years buys a year of his UFA status, then make it about 2 mil per. It's a joke that he was scratched for so long last season for Gragnani, and then scratched again to start this season. He'll be a solid 3rd pair guy that brings some toughness. Anybody that can go flying face first into the end boards and get right back up and skate off is my kind of player (cue Robert Duvall giving the wounded VC water and then taking it away from Apocalypse Now). That was from his first stint late in the 07-08 season at Boston.

You should look at what the bottom pairing defensemen on contenders get paid...

Bryan Allen 3.5
Andrew Ference 2.25
Michal Roszival 2.5
Matt Greene 2.95

Now you might think all of those guys are significantly better than Weber... and you might be right.

But you are wrong if you think building a contender includes putting garbage on your 3rd pairing.

I think Matt Greene is a good comparison for Weber... in terms of role, skillset, and career trajectory

I'd like the RD next year to be Myers, Sekera, Weber. Weber's had few issues playing RD as a lefty shooter.

I think he's a younger Montador, albeit a lefty.

great movie.

I'd do 3/$6M or 4/$8M.

He just turned 25. Buy 1 or 2 UFA years.

If Regier sticks to form, he's going to want to sign Weber for less money than Sekera since he has traditionally slotted salary by rank/toi going back to guys like McKee. Three year term would be buying a year of free agency, so that should drive the average up a bit. Something in the $2.1M range, perhaps up to $2.33M or even $2.5M. He's a solid #5 type guy when he's on his game. If they tie up more than that he he takes another swoon, that's a problem.

Don't care about term just get it done for 2 mil a year or under. With the cap going down we need to save wherever we can .

I wonder how much of his improvement (if any) is due to Ott being here. Or how much is do to natural progress.

Anyway 3 yrs 2.1 mil works for me

If they have any intent on keep Ott they will resign him this year.

He wont be that expensive. They can sign him to something like a 3 yr $3.6M contract. i look at him as a defensive/bottom pairing Dman.

Cap is not an issue next year.

the only big contract would be Hodgson which he likely get a bridge contract like Ennis get but maybe a little more than Ennis.

Sulzer is a UFA --he would be signed for not much of a alary increase.

Pardy is a UFA --could be resigned (current contract is $2M)

Flynn is an RFA...he likely doesnt get a significant raise on his current contract.

Regehr is a UFA...if he is resigned it will be for cheaper than his current contract of $4M per.

Leopold is an UFA and he likely is gone

Enroth is an RFA so if Miller is still here, he will get a cheaper backup contract of around $1M, with clauses based on games Either way the budget on goalie starting that could add more. If Miller is traded now or at the draft he could be paid more with there being an open job available. Either way---the budget on goalies will not go up next year significantly.

My thoughts exactly. Don't discount the relationship with Ott. Good for the locker room/team to keep these two together I would think.

Just came to post that I didn't see the whole Habs game, but I thought Weber was solid again from what I did watch. And his quick outlet pass on the Hab broken stick leading to Vanek's second goal was a heady play.

He's been steady.
