In fact, there are players that are even better penalty killers and better at faceoffs than Halpern and even manage to put up a point here and there.

For as much as we rip on Sather and Rangers management, do you really think they didn't put a flyer out there that said hey, we'll give you this guy for your anything. You want Jeff Halpern, you can have him. I'm sure they were trying. No one wants to trade for a geezer that has a whopping 1 point in 30 games. He can't score, he has no future (other than retirement). There's more to this game than taking faceoffs and killing penalties, much more. This isn't baseball where you need utility fielders who are only good at one aspect of the game. This is the NHL, you need to have guys who can produce in different aspects. Halpern was producing, in the aspect that is most easily filled. The other aspects, he was not. Pyatt and Powe should be next, but they are younger and have more potential to rebound than Halpern.
if gaustad got a 1st, halpern could get a 7th

But you have to look at the team he plays for. The Rangers have 71 goals, 2nd lowest in the NHL only to CBJ (oh the irony). Our leading scoring is Rick Nash, he has 10 goals: there are 42 players who have more goals than him. I think that if Halpern was playing on a team that wasn't completely inept offensively he would have better point production. As I said earlier in the thread, I'm pretty "meh" about this move, but you can't blame Halpern for poor offensive numbers when the whole team sucks offensively.

This move might not make sense, but logic would deem it likely that in short time, it will. And to those who think the catalyst for this was solely around his bad read last night, get a grip. Whether you agree with Torts or not, or agree with Slats or not, they're still professionals. And no professional is going to execute this based on one play on one shift. I mean really now..

One way to look at this:
They need a roster spot more than holding on for any perceived value for Halpern.
Something major may be going down soon.
If I were a team on the bubble looking at Gaborik, I would want him sooner than later.
It's probably 2 (+pick) for 1 deal or 3 for 2.
And they always like to have one open spot.

Another is Asham is ready and they need to get him playing time either to shwcase or for the playoff run.

Yet another, there is a call up coming. Newberry on the 3rd line? He had good chemistry with both Miller and Kreider in Hartford.

Take your pick.

everytime he comes up here, he doesnt do anything. he had his chances and he is 30 and still not an NHL reg.. rather call up Haley again or Mashinter or even Palimieri a shot... maybe Thomas again??

I'd be more than happy if Newbury never played another game for us. I'd actually prefer it.

The Rangers can use Boyle and Hagelin more on the PK. Use Nash on the PK. Kreider was used on the PK at BC. He scored a shorthanded goal last week for the Whale. The Rangers have trouble generating offense. Generate more offense by using players who generate more offense. Stepan and Callahan are a threat on the PK.

But Halpern has no goals and one assist while averaging about nine minutes of ice time, and last year’s penalty kill unit (87.3% effective) has slipped to an 81% efficiency rate this season with Halpern as one of its prominent forwards. Halpern was on the ice in Thursday’s first period when Panthers defenseman Brian Campbell scored on the power play.

Lol. The hand-wringing going on in this thread is ridiculous.

What will you guys say if he clears waivers? What will you say if he asked for a trade? What will you say if he was a problem in the lockerroom?

You just don't know. And without knowing, getting this upset over it is pointless. Hell, it's pointless even if you do know. Halpern isn't a difference maker on this team.

Worst case scenario, we lose a guy for nothing who can be easily replaced and has no future with the organization. That was going to happen at the end of the season anyway.

If they wanted to satisfy the lions, they should have thrown Bickel in the circus.
That's red meat.

If we can somehow fuse Newbury and Halpern into one man, you and I may have something beautiful. A defensively responsible player that neither of us would want.

Bad move. I would've sent Miller down 10 times before waiving Halpern. He may be washed up, but even as he is, teams win in the playoffs with players like him

Add Bickel to that concoction and this board explodes.

I feel like that fused player would be worse than either as an individual.

Laughable. Miller had one game and has outscored Halpern all season.

We went from one of the youngest teams in the league with nasty guys all around to bringing guys like Haleprn and Asham who are old used rags. Sather makes mistake after mistake and the ownership could give 2 *****...baffling.
Orr was there when they sucked. He has zero to do with their resurgence despite your crush.

Too bad it was the cheap utility guy that was actually doing his job - and may have actually gotten a pat on the back if the stiffs above him were actually doing theirs.
Nobody is happy about it. We don't care because it is the equivalent of absolutely nothing happening.

we have no offense in the bottom 3. can't expect halpern to put up numbers. he is a faceoff/defensive forward. we need more scoring in the bottom 6 right now. moving halpern allows us to play boyle as the 4th center (since apparently having 2 4C's is good), and slot either noob or miller into3c and throw back thomas or zuke or something on the 3rd's wing... idfk...

regardless--this will help... waste of a solid depth guy to get no assets, but it's w/e. not as bad as some people are making it out to be. i liked everything about halpern in the 4th line role, but i'd rather boyle be on the 4th than on the 3rd.

You just proved that it is stupid to give up something of value for Gaustad. And Halpern is worth far less.

By the way, at least at the moment the Rangers are not contenders. Therefore there is no justification for keeping a luxury item.

Can't say i'm happy. But certainly intrigued at the prospect that some sort of shakeup is looming with this black hole of a bottom six.

Happier than i am bothered, that's for sure.
