Maybe a 3 man rotation between Erskin, Olexy and Kundy.

When you pretend to not be a self-righteous *******, we'll pretend to be real fans.

When did they start that chant, was it post lock-out? Don't take it personally but I dislike that chant along with the "Who Cares" one after the PA announces the oppositions goal scorer. Seems like both of those chants surfaced within the last decade.

Wow. If this team is as good as their last 2 games, they could feast on that. Not convinced yet, but there's hope.

On the other hand, Save the Tank!

Especially Laich. He sure shook off the rust quick. He has been right in front of the net on at least two goals in last two games. He stood up for teammate Alzner nicely tonight when latter got trucked. Now if 21 could just start to bury his breakaways, then he might be an offensive powerhouse too.

I'll say one thing, that line of 20-21-9 looks super comfortable and efficient together. That's a keeper right there, IMO.

Don't scratch Oleksy!! He is our rabbit foot! And he plays with snarl. And he doesn't get thrashed when he does drop the gloves.

Instead of just posting the negatives like I did last night, I'll try a more balanced approach tonight. There's a lot to like from these past two games, but there were still plenty of warts. Both of these wins were as much about the Jets playing poorly as the Caps playing well.

Positives:
*Ovechkin's scoring
*Ovechkin's hitting
*Ovechkin's passing
*Ovechkin creating turnovers
*PK denying the zone
*PK generating shorthanded opportunities
*PK clearing the zone quickly
*Neutral zone play denying Winnipeg the zone (off sides helped)
*Forechecking applying good pressure and disrupting Winnipeg's breakout
*Creating turnovers
*Clean breakouts
*Transition gaining the zone
*21-9-20
*Great zone time
*Backchecked hard
*Much improved passing
*Exploiting Winnipeg's mistakes
*Exploiting Byfuglien's mistakes in particular
*Physical play and standing up for one another
*Played hard for all six periods
*Braden ****ing Holtby

Negatives:
*Too many penalties
*Too many bad penalties
*Too many turnovers and blind passes by the defensemen (namely Green and Oleksy)
*Defense weak down low and around the crease
*Cycle, while prolonging possessions, not creating many chances
*Giving up short handed chances
*Some players trying to get too cute with the puck, especially when easier plays were available (especially Johansson, Orlov, and Green)
*Defense getting smoked along the boards
*Not generating many shots
*Too many dangerous chances for Winnipeg in transition

I'd scratch (demote?) Kundratek, but bump Oleksy down to the 3rd pairing.

Alzner - Green
Erskine/Orlov - Carlson
Orlov/Erskine - Oleksy
Kundratek/Schultz/Poti

Kundratek is still waiver exempt, right? Might be better to send him back to Hershey to help out the Bears and get more playing time. Would miss his presence on the 2nd powerplay unit, though.

I'd agree with this. Though I think Orlov will be a better PP player than Kundratek when he gets up to speed.

I haven't watched the last game as I'm away from the high-speed internet, BUT from what I've seen and read, Orlov-Green pair is a keeper. Alzner-Carlson, Orlov-Green, Erskine-Oleksy.

I still agree with you. Eight games against weak teams may continue to hide the warts. Or they may play better game to game. Still, 10 goals on 44 shots is fun to watch. Too bad Holts couldn't get the SO tonight. He played 6 solid periods in the Peg.

Happy with a win. I don't see a game we shouldn't win on the schedule the next two weeks if they bring it every night. Maybe that Sunday Flyers game....

This is a completely different team with Laich, Green, and Orlov back. No Schultz, no Poti, no CrabbyPati, 2 legit scoring lines, and 3rd and 4th line that can score and move the puck.

Get Big John back and we could be on to something.

Also, I reserve the right to jump back on the tank wagon if they can't beat the Rangers. We can only play the 'peg, Buffalo, and Florida so many times.
Well said and losing the NY teams will be a crushing blow, mostly because I hate two of them. Adding Olesky into the mix with Green, Alzner, Carlson, and Orlov is pretty nice. Hillen hasn't been bad either.

The only team that scares me out of that bunch is the NYI and Buffalo. The Caps tend to have a terrible time in Buffalo. I won't rule out TB either.

Correlation does not equal causation. I could just as easily credit the alternate jerseys or Ovechkin's haircut.

Or, maybe, they finally realized after the 4-1 loss to Boston that the time to stop sleepwalking through the season had come, and that the playoffs begin IMMEDIATELY, with this road trip being "do or die". Just like when they suddenly kicked ass vs Florida some weeks back, they seem to have had a fire lit under their ass this week.

No Green or Laich vs Buffalo following the Boston loss, and they looked like world-beaters. Then they " outplayed" the streaking, East-leading Pens and lost on a freak momentum shift after a failed double minor. No Green in that game, and Laich just returning.

The reality is the goaltender has been hot, and the top 6 forwards have been producing like they're supposed to.

Over the past few seasons, when Green is in the lineup, the team is better. Just look at last year, a winning streak to start the season. Then Green gets hurt, the team struggles, and BB gets fired.

This team can play a run and gun game when he plays. Teams respect his ability. Why else would they continue to target him.

When you have to worry about a d-man, it changes their game plan. No other d-men on this team demand that attention.

Holtby wasn't tested much in Winnipeg at all. How many 2 on 1s or breakaways have we given up in the last 3 games??

We aren't even fully healthy yet and the guys who just returned (MJ/Green/Laich/Orlov) still have some rust to shake off.

I agree 21 has been a difference-maker. He brings energy line energy mixed with skill and a nice hockey IQ. He still doesn't look 100% healthy though IMO. His stride on the break-aways has been uncharackeristically abreviated.
