I agree about bishop, not sure when this guy became so good. Bishop = DD if you ask me. A big guy that takes up space.

STL sucked OTT in with the "oh look at this big goalie in the minors", the same guy STL had so little confidence in as a back they signed Brian Elliot after his 2010/11 season.

OTT trying to do the same thing now. Bishop's played pretty well, but he's nothing special and not worth any significant assets.

We somehow identified a centre who is even more of an offensive black hole than Eric Belanger.

point 1: waiver claim, no loss in assets.
point 2: if we pick him up, then we have to put a guy on waivers. believe it or not, I would rather have Peckham or Potter than this guy.

And at 37 yo, he's probably on his last legs, I'm not even sure he will play in the league next season.
Why do our 4th liners need to score? Isn't that what our top 9 is suppose to do?

Yep.

He also is only -3 in shots for/shots against per 60 while only starting in ozone 27% of the time. So he has been pretty good for a fourth liner.

My friend just emailed me this.
Where in the blue hell could he have got this from?

Sounds like the most believed rumor is that the Oilers may trade Smid for a few picks/prospects.

Then in the summer trade Hemsky to CBJ for Jack Johnson.

Sorry to your friend, but in what world does Columbus trade us Johnson for Hemsky? And getting Johnson wouldn't suddenly make Smid expendable, it would shore up a gaping wide hole. I keep my ears open, and I haven't heard anything like this.

This was mentioned on Oilers Nation (I think) a few weeks ago, I'm not sure I buy it.

And what reason would they have to wait for the summer? Why gamble waiting that long if they were going to deal Snid at the deadline?

It's not going to happen. These whole "future date" trades are just a way for rumor guys to say "well it was in the cards, but this happened so the deal can't happen now".

Ya he's a bum. Oh wait, that .921 save percentage is top 8 in the league.

And yes you want a big guy that takes up space. And hopefully he is actually a little quicker, a little better at handling the puck, and a little brighter about covering up pucks in his feet than Dubnyk.

A think a second round pick type compensation is well worth the risk. If you can think of a cheaper way to get someone as good or a legitimate way to find someone much better Im all ears. We need at least a decent backup for Dubnyk next year. I think he is a pretty good option for us.

And if you can do a Whitney for Bishop trade Im all in in a heartbeat.

The oilersnation thing came up because some guy called into Stauffer's show and said something like "why don't we get a d-man from Columbus, they have plenty", and Stauffer said "what have you been reading emails or something", and then hint hint hint Oilers looking at a Columbus d-man.

Then Johnson became the likely target somehow. God no.

If there was any truth to this, I would hope that Howson working for us would kaibosh it.

The more I think about it, the more I think the organization picks between N. Schultz and Smid. Both are too expensive to be bottom pairing, neither are good enough for top pairing minutes on a cup team, and I'd hate to see them put together as a unit as neither are great offensively or at moving the puck as the 2nd pair.

Smid easily. I think Smid is a significantly better player then Nick Schultz is and if that's what it came down to I'd like to think that the answer would be as obvious to the management.

He's a serviceable goalie who only costs 650k right now.

Oilers should sign Smid $3.5-3.75 M long-term. He's a valuable, poised, hard-nosed, stay-at-home defenseman, unlike any other within their system. If the playoff picture looks fairly glum for the team, they could trade him for some valuable picks at the deadline and then sign him back as a UFA again in the summer.

On Smid, realistically, you either get him for 3-5 years at 4M per, or you get him at 3.75M per for 5-7 years. Anything higher and it starts to get iffy.

How often does that trade then sign actually happen. I am sure if that is the real plan you will not get much in return for the player.

I personally wouldn't pay a "premium" to get Smid signed. Keep negotiations cordial and friendly. Go with 3.5M and a 4-6 year term. If he doesn't want to sign, let him test the market.

Does anyone actually see someone showing up with 4.5M per year for Smid? If a club does, enjoy.

If he's not signed before the deadline - just keep negotiating.

I think a team would give him 5. He's young, has upside still and unlike the typical shutdown defencemen he's very mobile and can make a good first pass. If he took the highest bidder I think he could get 5 per year from someone.

His first pass is mediocre and he's not worth remotely close to 5. If someone offers him 5 let them have him. He should be offered no more than 3.25 imo if its short term. We have too many low caliber D being paid too much (N Schultz, Whitney). Next year the cap shrinks and If he wants 4ish then he can be traded at the deadline. I'd maybe go as high as 3.5 if it has a good term.

There have been no talks between the Dallas Stars and Derek Roy's camp in over a week. Top candidate for a new home.

Yes I know who the source is...but that aside...anyone interested?
