Maybe we should call Green Minus Fiddy

Not good for more than 50 games a year.

I don't think this iteration of the D is that bad at all. In fact its much better than we've had at any point of GMGMs tenure and I'd like to see them injury free.

Green, Carlson, Alzner, Erskine, Oleksy, Kundratek and Orlov are a nice set of 7 dmen going into next year to me. You can do a hell of alot worse than that!

Its our youth and lack of top end forwards that is the problem. Obviously the youth you live with but you can't have Hendricks and Chimera in your top 6.
Our lack of top end forwards would be a lot less of a problem if our top end forwards (Ovi, Backs) were playing like they used to play. Each of them have steadily and significantly declined since they signed their big fat long term deals.

I can't disagree with the production component of what you say one bit.

But Ovie played even better for a couple years after his deal was signed so I'm not sure about his decline.

I seriously hope you're not suggesting his three year extension and raise was a mistake.

After all the guy was a 2 time Norris finalist when he didn't completely suck and had some kind of a stable role on the team.

Ugh..

I was trying to be funny more than commenting on his three year extension via making a reference to his old dpart Sarge, who I call plus fiddy. Living off that one year. If I wanted to talk about his contract, I wouldn't make reference to a plus minus number he never achieved. Fact is he IS injury prone. And it's not funny.

Lets talk contract. We committed a lot of time and money only to see him change his game. Injuries aside, after he was snubbed for the Olympics, even you have to realize his focus on defense has changed the game that we all became Norrised over.

Between him lucky to garner a single Norris vote and his repeated injuries, anyone suggesting him being overpaid may be doing so because his scoring dropped off a cliff. His stock has fallen. Would you still pay $150 for a share of AOL?

Who is the Mike Green that we are paying for now? Flip a coin that his new focus on defense will be the gateway back to Norris talk, or the injuries take their toll, the best is now behind him.

GP 49 - 32 - 16. The trends of GP sure don't look good.

4 pt game?

7pts outta first? (game in hand)

5pts outta 8th?

They played well. 8-19-90 looked great. 21-9-20 looked really good too. We still need defensemen, but Orlov back helps a bit. Erskine's return would help, and a trade for another vet D-men to round out the top 6.

All that said?

Well if the caps win the next two they're 3 points down the division lead! We're lucky to be in a WEAK division this year..

The Caps are playing with our emotions clearly.

IF they win tonight and continue getting healthier (what a different team it seems with Green/Orlov/Laich) then who knows?

Its clearly not helping the tank though...but neither are the other teams like the Canes/Rags/Isles/Leafs etc.

What a terwd the Jets laid last night. Gotta give the Caps some credit too.

That line up last night looked good. Take out Hillen and put in Erskine and it would look even better.

For how well they played against Winnipeg, defensive game obviously needs a lot of work. The boys allowed the Jets to go past them too often and sometimes revisited their old mistake of not being able to clear the zone.
We can't rely on Holtby allowing 0.5 goals.

Winnipeg also looks terrible defensively. The coverage on the Beagle goal was abysmal. How do three players chase a winger behind the net?

4pt game?

5pts outta 1st in SE? (-1 in games)

3pts outta 8th in East? (+1 in games)

10th in East?

Things are looking up, whenever this team plays a scrub! Ovechkin is playing back to snuff, top 2 lines look like world beaters, Holtby is fantastic! Hey, I love to win, and I'm a Caps fan first and foremost!

That said?

You do know there was another NHL team playing last night with world class caliber players right?

You aren't going to give up 0 scoring chances.

The Peg had a couple decent ones (burmistrov rebound) but really it was damn good D the Caps played and transitioned well.

In these two games its not like Holtby had to stand on his head and he really didn't face many prime scoring chances. Did we even give up a 2 on 1 or a breakaway? Don't think so but not sure.

They've still only won one game against a top team (BOS). Don't get your hopes up for anything until they can skate with the best on a consistent basis.

How many top teams have we played after the "25 games to learn the system" threshold, with Green and Laich in the lineup, and getting let's just say, average goalie play?

I like to rain on the canceled parade, it's zero.

The team looks much different than it did just a week ago. We added Laich Green Oleksy and Orlov. That is 3 guys all were counting on being in the lineup.
