NHL facilities to celebrate Earth Hour 2013

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=661309

Quote:
On Saturday, March 23, all NHL arenas will join hundreds of millions of homes and businesses worldwide, switching-off non-essential lighting for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., local time. Eighteen of the League's 30 Clubs will be in action that Saturday.

While energy builds on the ice with Playoff positions at stake, all facilities will scale back the electricity used in their operations during the globally recognized hour.
IIRC last year, many turned off unneeded exterior lights for that hour.

It would be awesome if they turned off the "unneeded" advertisements and sensory assault from the big screens.

Agree with this. Those ads are so garish.

I wish the NHL would stay away from politics. If Seattle got a team, I would hope they would celebrate "Human Achievement Hour" instead and blast the lights as bright as possible to celebrate humanity's escape from cavemanism.

By extension that means if everyone turns off their lights forever we can save the earth is my take.

I was in Nashville a few years ago during this "earth hour". My brother and his family had tickets to the game that happened that night and i went with them. After the game, one artist who is a season ticket holder set up free concert at the main entrance to the arena (Jo Dee Messina). It was about a 40 minute set with half accoustic when the earth hour kicked in.

In Nashville the main music bars are 1-2 blocks from the Arena and they do acoustic sets during the earth hour.

My favorite part of this whole earth hour is the strain that is applied to the power grid when things are turned back on.

It's a nice symbolic gesture. I think if the NHL didn't do it, there would be a lot of negative publicity about how the NHL doesn't care about sustainability. And so there would be business consequences.

What an absolutely pointless waste of time...

But the NHL doesn't, in fact, care about sustainability.

Staples Center has an NBA game tonight instead of the NHL game. Will they still do it?

Maybe they shouldn't use goal lights either, since those are now useless. I can't think of a single thing that serves less purpose than goal lights in the NHL.

Had an NHL game during the afternoon, Canucks and Kings. I didn't notice the Canucks announcers mention anything about Earth Hour, so either nothing happened, or they didn't bother to say it on the air.
