Ecklunds at it again, This time Tanabe to NY

Just listening to XM driving home and Ecklund came on. States that Tanabe is now the best UFA dman out there and that the Rangers need a d-man. I am not sure where they would fit another one. States that Leetch is the PP specialist and role player that would work with the Rangers but stated that Tanabe could fill the same role.

Also talked about massive player movement as arbitration is over and teams will be moving players.

Just thought I would pass on the filth. I agree we need a PP defenceman but I think Leetch in a limited role would be the best bet.

Tanabe plays a similar game to Leetch, is younger, and is faster. I don't know about his power play qb skills, because from what I've seen from him in Phoenix on center ice, he's nothing to get excited about, but at this point, he might just fit the bill depending on how Cullen works for us.

He's not someone we need. He's awful.

Stay away!

I don't want this guy anywhere near the Rangers. Boston made it sound like a numbers game, but it's no coincidence that 3 teams (Carolina, Phoenix and Boston) have already given up on this guy despite how young he is.

Why do the Rangers need a dman? All the top 6 spots are already spoken for.

Tanabe? Seriously? David freakin' Tanabe?

The man who has played for several teams in his career and worn out his welcome each and every time faster than a girl can bat an eyelash?

Yeah no thanks, going to have to pass.

My thoughts exactly. Why all this talk of another defenseman? I couldn't understand what Brooks was trying to say in today's Post. He even suggested Malik could be traded to make room for Leetch.

Right or wrong,Sather loves fast puck moving D-men. After the top six you have Pock, Baranka, Lampman, Staal. Injuries will happen so to me it comes down to Pock at 650K or Tanabe at around a million +.

I've been an Eklund proponent because as a rumor monger, I think he DOES have legitimate sources. He was on for the Belfour signing recently. HOWEVER, I am now concluding, YES, he has some good sources but he also has some terrible sources and what makes me lose respect is that he doesn't seem to care what rumor he gets. This guy will post anything. It's really up to the reader to filter out all the bad stuff, but hidden in there is the occasional gem. All in all, in the end, it makes for good conversation (sometimes).

On Topic.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

edit: oh yeah, I say Sather passes. This is one small fish he's gonna throw back. He won't waste his cap flexibility for Tanabe. He's gonna wait to reel in the big one!

Tanabe = new Poti

Promise/Potential/Youth still don't equal a NHL defensemen. Pass and don't look back.

Good think this is just Eklund BS. Tanabe is not needed in NY.

Even 10 years younger Tanabe doesn't deserve to be mentioned seriously in comparison to Brian Leetch. Forget that.

Beat me to it. They're the exact same player.

Without knowing a thing about Tanabe, I would be skeptical signing him.

Any team that walks away from a ONE year deal for a d-man... with 20 points (4 goals) and is considered a "powerplay specialist" and a "rushing defensman"... sounds alot like a POTI to me.

And i DO know what Tanabe brings to the table... and thats ... not much.

NOOOOO.

I can see the ISLES biting on this though...

Short of something completely out of left field, I think our "D" is set.

The one thing that might happen is that if Staal has a great camp the Rangers might give him the ten game max before they send him back to Sudbury. This would give him the chance to force their hand and make some move to keep him in the line up as the 6th D.

Wishful thinking almost certainly but, I hope he earns that chance.

Kinda like Blackburn in fall of 01. He earned that spot as a backup after that 10 game window.

As a Bruins fan I hope the Rangers do sign him and play him 20 minutes a night. 25 minutes against the Bruins.

Seriously, he is NOT a PP "QB". Not even close. He can skate like the wind but he provides almost zero offense. He does not even have a great shot. He is literally just a great skater with almost no hockey sense. Poti, IMO, is much better.

I occassionally read Eklund's board. Here's what I have noticed, 1) MOST of his apostles are rangers or leafs fans. 2) 90% of the time he mentions a player, the leafs and/or rangers are "involved". Coincidence? I think not.

That's not surprising. The Leafs and Rangers have the most fans in the league. They get more coverage than other teams because it means those news outlets (and individuals) get more money because of that.

i dont agree, i think:

The Habs, the Wings, the Avs, the Flyers, etc all have about the same following as the rangers and the leafs.

there are quite a few popular teams out there. the problem is there are also teams like the devils, with 5 people in the stadium for a playoff game.
