No point in speculating about reasons unless there's a leak or something, but I can't remember any sports media personality just getting fired like that unless something actionable happened.

If you think he isn't very good you just quietly not renew his contract or at least make the change in the off-season.

Emrick is so awesome.

He brings so much energy to a broadcast compared to Ken Daniels.

Ever notice that NBC games seem so much more exciting than FSD games?

They could just be eliminating him and not doing the whole in between the benches and just going with Eliot in the studio. The Pistons and Tigers only have 2 announcers and 1 in studio ex player so the Red Wings will probably stick to that. It still sucks. Murph was the man!

Ed Olczyk is the only guy I don't like. His anti-Red Wing bias is very obvious. He sounds so unenthusiastic when he's forced to say something positive about the Wings. I really hate it when he does Hawks vs. Wings games.

With Redmond's health problems cleared up and less travel next year, Murphy is more of a luxury than a neccessity.

Ratings is a spin for stupid people. It's about not wasting money.

What I wonder is how much they pay Eliot for about 10 minutes of hockey insight a game.

The FSD reporters do their intermission and pre and post game interviews, but they also work on features for the weekly show, etc.

But how can it be worth it for Eliot?

This times a million.

Also, seriously, people would want Pierre on the mic? I can't think of many people I would want less.

...as great as it is to hear where every single effing person on either team (from Canada) played peewee hockey and how many slurpees they drank when they were 7 years old in Saskatoon on a road trip to Mississauga, and how many shots they took in the first 45 seconds of their first game of mites. Repeat, EVERY time they touch the puck.

that's why they have doc and pierre, those guys gush over the wings. its kind of funny. you'll see next year both of the Det-Chi games will either be on NBC or NBC sports net
they love those games and their ratings.

I like that sort of thing, I'm a fun fact sort of person though. and its not just Canadians he does the same thing for Americans, I know I've heard him talk about Miller, Howard, and Abdelkader like that in the past.

Pierre is what's wrong with broadcasting. Pierre overdoes EVERYTHING. His praise is over the top. His criticism is over the top.

Pierre McGuire is the perfect example of why television is called the idiot box

I'll be honest here. I hate hearing Pierre between the benches. But when he does an interview or talks outside those benches he's quite delightful. Very savvy, informative and entertaining.

And despite all this I'd trust him to GM an NHL team over almost any other commentator.

I like Pierre a lot of the time, but I think that's because he's a hockey nerd and I am too. He gets excited over little things like how a player has progressed from junior and at times I can relate.

I'll admit that he's not very likeable, though. What he has in raw knowledge he gives up in charisma.

Pierre is a real smart guy without a doubt, but he is unbelievably annoying and awkward.

I like Pierre. He gets a lot of unwarranted hate for not being dull, simple, and predictable like most commentators.

Fox Sports Detroit released the following statement today regarding the decision to terminate Larry Murphy from its Detroit Red Wings broadcast team:

“We wanted our primary team of Mickey Redmond and Ken Daniels to call the remaining games as the Red Wings make a push for the playoffs. We thought it was only fair to let Larry know as soon as possible that he would not be scheduled for any more assignments. We thank Larry for his contributions to our telecasts over the years and we wish him well.”

Larry Murphy was the most knowledgeable guy on FSN Detroit. I am shocked they fired him. I find it hard to believe that he is the cause for bad ratings when Mickey York and Darren Elliot are there. He must have pissed off the wrong person.

FSD's statement makes no sense on any level. It's like a standardized form email you get as an auto-reply from a crap company's customer service.
