Looks like a top prospect. Too good for juniors but not good enough for the NHL. Ideally he would of spent this season in the AHL.

Not really sure we see Connolly up here next year, think he may be AHL bound for a season.

Probably needs some AHL time, honestly. Him getting 5 minutes a night isn't helping either the team or him develop (although you could argue that practicing with Marty doesn't hurt).

Would like to see him train with Stammer and Downie in the summer, but that seems to be a tight knit group to get into.

He needs to be in the A until he learns how to backcheck.

Agreed. What about taking a gamble with Ashton next season?

There's no real gamble with Ashton. I mean he won't make the team if he's not ready, but If he sticks with us out of camp and later starts to slowly sink, he can always be sent back down to Norfolk. But he's in a good position because he is older and stronger, and this past year developing with Norfolk should really help him.

Depends what happens in free agency. I think if SY gets a steal in FA like he wants, then its AHL for Ashton once more.

Well either way, its good for Ashton. His contract is up next year I think, so I can see him staying in the A next season to keep cost down for a resign.

Looking at the Tri-City Americans if he were to be sent down there he would probably get playing time and play on either the first or second line. He would be with Shinnimin (37 goals/55 assists) & Hughsman (33/53) or Holland (20/56) & Feser (29/34) , it looks like he would fit in with either line as they both score well. Shinnimin, Hughsman, & Holland are in the top 10 in scoring in the WHL. He would see plenty of action for the remainder of this year to prepare him for next season.

Ive never been a huge fan of Connolly. Admittedly, some of it is displaced anger about not taking Fowler with that pick. However, something just seems off with him for some reason. Dont know what it is.

I would not blink if we sent him to Vancouver for Schneider.

I agree with you. If Connolly has to go to bring in a quality goalie, so be it. I just can't put my finger on what i is about him. I think its that as of right now, he does everything well. No aspect stands out as great to me, but nothing is bad either. He just doesn't seem ready yet. Playing him in the NHL for 5 to 7 minutes a game isn't helping either though.

Kind of doubt it since we have a shortage of forwards right now and I don't believe SY wants to pull more players from Norfolk. He had been talking about it last week, but no news on what the final decision was.

"There's an argument for both sides," Yzerman said. "He plays the final (20) games and gets a lot of ice time, obviously, the NHL is a better league than junior hockey. The tempo is higher, the players are stronger. He's going to benefit on that if he plays." (...)

"I don't know that he really struggled. He hasn't played a whole lot," Yzerman said. "The coaches were going with veteran guys, trying to win. It's hard to have an impact when you play five minutes."

I think he played his best games of the seaon the last two games, let him stay and get more icetime and see what he can do with it.

I've only seen him play a couple of times earlier in the season. How would people characterize his year as a whole? Will he stay with the club next year or be sent to the AHL?

This year has been a great learning experience for him and he's been able to get past some of the labels that have stick with him predraft. He's been able to show he can stay healthy a whole season playing the NHL, and he's shown that his desire, attitude, and work ethic are not a problem. He even got high praise for the leadership he displayed at the WJC.

He can play and stay with the team next season, but it's up to him how hard he works over the offseason. If he keeps up with everything imo he should not only stay here but have a good sophomore season too.

IMO an off season with Gary Roberts would do wonders for him.

Is he playing well so far this season and what's the chance to see him next year in the NHL?
