With Backstrom. We have two unprovens in the minors and Harding who we cannot count on. I think Backs has 2-3 good years left.

Hockey is a business. You cannot let assets go without a return. Seto, Cullen and Backstrom are all assets. Seto you can sit on for year so we a luxury there. If you have a chance to make the team better why not?
With the position we are currently in, Fletcher should hold on to Cullen and maybe even offer him another year. We simply cannot break up the Cullen/Setoguchi combo with the way they are playing.

I was one of those blasting Cullen early in the season...he has definitely proved me wrong. His game is on right now, that's for sure.

Burns is not worth the $5.8MM he was paid by SJS. That alone was worth a win by Fletch. Think about it on another level. Their long-term replacement for Boyle, Burns, is now playing forward. Perhaps SJS has figured out he is only good on offense.

From my perspective, the Wild have won on every deal with SJS.

I was in the Cullen bashing camp as well. Always in the back of my mind is the streaky play, disappearing act in 2nd half of season. Perhaps it will work out well this year since ther is no 2 nd half of the season.

Last year when Cullen "played poorly", the line up was devastated by injuries. Cullen was trying to Center an NHL #1 line with 3-4th Liners and minor leaguers. Obvious recipe for disaster.

Cullen has definitely had consistency issues in the past. But, so far it's hard to see him tailing off this year. Cullen-Seto looks more than just a streak, they look like they have great chemistry, which both have lacked in the past. This combo could be good for as long as Cullen is playing, no reason to break up such a good thing right now. If they continue like this, there is no way Granlund unseats Cullen as the 2C next year.

If you think this time is different with Cullen, expect to get taken advantage of in your life a lot. Cullen has ALWAYS been a streaky player. In Carolina, Ottawa, and the Wild. Go back and check his stats with just the Wild. He always gets hot during the first half, and then completely fades.

It would be a mistake to re-sign him to a big contract, or even re-sign him in general. He's having a good season. Let him ride it out. Cheer him. Be happy for him.

But don't jump to conclusions that aren't worth anything.

I'd rather re-sign him to a decent 1 or 2 year deal at around 2.5mil cap hit as insurance than put all my hopes on granlund. If FBJ isn't ready still and you don't resign cullen, your #2 center is now kyle brodziak. We aren't going to sign a #2 in FA, that would be a 3+year 4+Mill contract.

and lets be honest here, for the first time since Matt Cullen has got here, there is actually some consistency in this line up and his wingers every night. He has been one of the more consistent players since put back to center imo. He didn't score last night, but he buzzed in the o zone all game.

+ hes a also good at FO's, PKing, isn't a liability, he has alot of playoff experience, has a cup, and knows our system.

And if Granlund is ready?

Then you have 2.5 million + 1 million for Kenopka = 3.5 million in 4th line centers.

It must really eat you up that Cullen is playing great after your hundreds of posts hating on him. No kidding you wouldn't want to re-sign him. You've ragged on Cullen more than Ken Campbell has whined about fighting.

He always fades? Playoffs with Ott the year before the Wild signed him he played great. The Cup Winning run with Carolina, again had a fantastic playoffs, especially when he was QB'ing Caro's 1st Unit PP from the left point. Two pretty big examples contrary to your "fact".

You tell people not to jump to conclusions, I'd tell you to not let your biases blind you.

Lucky for the Wild that 2 notoriously streaky players are clicking together, Cullen and Gooch.

Cullen is a guy I find it difficult to dislike.

Cool story bro. Don't pretend I have some personal hatred of Cullen. He is what he is. A 2nd/3rd center tweener. It's always been that way. When he was on Carolina, he was 3rd center there behind Staal and Brind'Amour for most of the time.

Here is Cullen's game log with the Wild. He falls off in the 2nd half of the season.

I'm just pointing out the obvious. Cullen is streaky. Most seasons he has about 30 games where he is on fire. The rest of the time? He's not doing much in 5v5 and he's falling down all the time. Toss in his age and he's limited ceiling and Granlund, and it's not like it's a difficult decision to look for better options as our 2nd line center next season.

Who let R2D2 into the discussion?! I haven't seen so many 010101's since Fortran! Quantity trumps quality?

The first year that Cullen sucked so bad with the Wild (in your mind) - how many shorthanded goals did he have that season? Shorties are usually a Big Deal in a hockey game. Who holds the record for most short handed goals in a season for the MN Wild? I'll bet on Walz, of course, but Cullen ranks up there, too.

When the Wild runs out of Dmen in a game due to injury, which forward starts taking a regular shift on D? The guy who falls down all the time? Yeah, that's the ticket, take a forward who's such a poor skater he falls down all the time and make him your emergency Dman. Huh. Doesn't sound right to me. Cullen, a forward, steps up and plays D. Why would Yeo let a forward who falls down all the time take over that critical position?

From your posts I'm sure you're an expert judge of skating. So you think Cullen can't skate? Lots of industry pros would disagree with you, I believe. Because anyone above rookie or Mite stage can see the obvious, Cullen is an outstanding skater. Does he push the envelope and fall down sometimes? I think so. But better to go for it and crash sometimes to make the play instead of coasting and watching the play.

Yeah, for some reason you have a hard on against Cullen. No biggie. Compared to the Granlund worshippers, your Hate Cullen bias is almost normal.

The amount he comes off as having a hard on against Cullen is about the same as the amount you come off as having a hard on for Cullen right now. He really isn't as good as you say. He IS an extremely streaky player, and his career high is less than 50 points. He did fall down a lot last year, and outside of maybe 15-20 games, he was largely invisible.

He's from MN, that's reason enough to dislike him for some people.

You have a lot of pro-MN fans who would like the Wild to sign any and every MN player. But you also have a significant group of people who automatically dislike the player because he's from MN. The standard, "Oh, they're only signing him because he's from MN, he sucks!" attitude. I think Cullen actually has taken a ton of flack from those kid of people.

This. Cullen is playing really well right now and I love it, but you absolutely can't deny that he's always been a streaky player.

Not only that but we are seeing Cullen right now in a shortened season and not in March of a regular season. He isn't getting younger and the thought of signing him for an amount of money that we could likely get a younger equally productive C has to be looked at.

I wouldn't trade him but i wouldn't fall over myself to re-sign him either.

I'd take Cullen for another 3.5M year. Having center depth is a new and amazing feeling.

I'd give Cullen a 1-year extension, but my guess is that they'll give him two years.

I'm down for keeping Cullen 1-2 more years on a reduced cap hit. Even if he can't play 2nd line C he can play wing and is a good leader and role model to have.

Seto is showing he wants to stay which is good.

As i've said before PMB is the guy i think we need to look into moving, hope he continues to play well and raises his value and then he gets moved at the deadline.

I like Cullen and Backstrom, but not at their cap hits. Both will have to take discounts to stay.

I don't want to go find it, but I said last summer that Heatley would be a very attractive option for any team which is looking to his the floor, but not having to pay out a **** load of cash for his actual salary.

He carries a 7.5 million cap hit and is only owed 5 million.

Teams like the Islanders/Coyotes need players like him to hit the floor. Still, I don't see him moving just yet.
