MacArthur for Clowe

Curious what both fanbases think of this deal.

Ryane Clowe, 30 - 3.265 mil/2013 UFA
Clarke MacArthur, 27 - 3.250 mil/2013 UFA

Toronto adds a grittier veteran winger, and experienced playoff performer.

San Jose adds a more mobile winger, capable of producing more offense at this stage of their careers.

Thoughts?

I personally dont really like it, the leafs have a few very obvious needs, another winger just isnt one of them. If we trade mac it should be as a piece in a deal to aquire one of the things we need, IE a #1 goalie, a top pairing D, or a #1 Center.

the value seems pretty close to me though.

I understand Clowe brings more than point producing, but don't really want to trade a guy with 17 points for a guy with 9 points and no goals, especially with how well MacArthur plays with Kadri.

San Jose should say yes if their goal is to make the playoffs.

If SJ is a seller they should keep Clowe because his skillset is probably worth more to a contender at the deadline.

Is SJ trying for the playoffs? I thought they were trying to do a mini-rebuild on the fly and would want someone younger, who's not about to become a ufa.

MacArthur will no longer be playing with Kadri, Lupul will.

I think Clowe is better suited for a bottom 6 role.

That's possible.

But they are in 9th, still competing.

Meh, maybe. Just because we need a 3rd liner.

Mac is a much better option for a top 6 role though

I like MacArthur and think he's pretty underrated on these boards, but honestly, if he comes here he's going to run into the same problem as everyone else on this team: the inability to score due to coaching strategy. The team currently has no chance to succeed in the playoffs and is not a MacArthur away from doing so. I'd rather trade Clowe to someone willing to give up prospects or picks to help with an on-the-fly retool.

I'd do it. Better fit for the team than Clowe.

I wouldn't do it.

Sharks fans themselves hate the guy, apparently he's been garbage the last while. MacArthur is still serviceable and more valuable. Cheaper, younger, has more points.

There would be no reason for us to make this move.

Clowe is having a lousy season but is objectively a MUCH better player than Clarke Macarthur.

For that reason I don't think either team would do this trade. The Leafs wouldn't want to mess with their chemistry for a guy who will be UFA and is struggling so badly, might have a nagging injury or something. The Sharks would probably want to get some younger players for Clowe, guys who are on good contracts and not UFA.

Clowe sure is trying his darndest to appear worthless. Maybe he loves SJ and doesn't want to leave.

Not that I think you are wrong but, everyone on this team is not scoring so it is quite conceivable that clowe would find his touch again in a new system. He would be a bigger, meaner presence too which it seems tor is clamoring for too.

I like the trade value wise but totally understand both the people for and against this one.

Ya that must be it... Since you know, if he played good the Sharks would definitely want him off their team.

Yep. This is key. Clowe's not doing so hot right now but he's a better player than he's showing...very, very easily.

Would do it.

Since joining the Leafs Macarthur has 122 points in 184 games for 0.66 points per game. In that time span Clowe has 116 points in 176 games for 0.66 points per game.

Sure, Clowe brings more to the table than scoring, but I'm not sure that the fact that he fights (which the Leafs have plenty of guys capable of that) makes him objectively a MUCH better player. The gap between them isn't big at all.

Eh, I wouldn't do this were I TO. Clowe's bad season is enough to want to stay with the guy proven to gel with the team.

I would definitely do this were I SJ, unless they are desperate to re-sign Clowe next year.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if he gets signed to an affordable extension.

Doug Wilson isn't great, but he's not idiotic enough to trade Clowe for CM, imho. If he does, well, Doug Wilson takes a dive.

I say no, because I'd bet Clowe's rights are worth more and at this point that's more important for our team than another one and done playoff appearance.

Wasn't Los Angeles a one and done team last season?

Clowe would bring strong board play which we could really use imo

Doesn't make sense for us. If we're in the playoff hunt, we're better off keeping Playoff performer Clowe. If we're selling him at the deadline, we're looking for futures.
