He's an offensive defender though. Needs some work in his own zone. Skating is about the only thing they have in common.

Don't forget that's exactly what Daley was coming out of junior as well. He didn't have Morrow's shot or hockey sense though.

So does stand around with my head on a swivel deflecting pucks into my own net because my positioning is awful Trevor Daley.

Are you watching the same game over there?

I've seen no mention of Morrow's hockey sense being anything spectacular, but if it is, okay he's an improved Trevor Daley.

Encouraging...

@MikeHeika

Joe Morrow played at Portland, and Stars feel very good about their ability to scout WHL. Same group who wanted Cody Eakin wanted J. Morrow.

Joe coming to Dallas first then they'll decide on staying or heading to Cedar Park, via Heika.

Have watched Morrow a good bit this year in WBS as a Pens's fan. His skating ability is the real deal and he is very comfortable rushing the puck up the ice. Has a big shot, though he's been racking up most of his points by getting his wrister deflected or punched in on rebounds. Is confident offensively and isn't afraid to shoot, very decisive with the puck when a shooting opportunity is presented.

Defensively, for the first 20 games or so, he was easily the worst WBS d-man in his zone. It's not a problem of physicality or anything, but d-zone awareness was just all over the place, leading to being out of position or in poor position to make a solid defensive play. The last 20-25 games or so, he has definitely improved at that aspect but is still prone to mistakes a bit more than I'd like. There's been talks in the papers and in various media of Pens's management "completely breaking down" his defensive game and healthy scratched Morrow numerous times early on.

Morrow has been playing the great majority of the season on the 3rd pairing with Phillip Samuelsson, a defensive defenseman and on the 2nd PP unit. WBS is a heavily slanted defensive team, they don't score many goals and give up even less. Not sure how much Morrow has either been helped on hindered by that. It's a team with a very poor forward group when it comes to skill and creativity.

Would appreciate any in-depth report on how Brendan Morrow has looked this year. Have seen a bit and am a bit underwhelm on how he'll look with Malkin and Neal, as that's where he'll likely to start at.

He should have to earn a call up in the AHL before we throw him into the fire.

Let's hope this kid is the real deal.

Trade Daley and Robidas next. Throw in Benn (Jordie, that is) for free.

You guys win this one for sure (unless we manage to win the Cup this year then we can call it a draw).

Enjoy Joe Morrow. I have a feeling he'll be up for you guys first thing next year if not see a game or two this year. He has a bomb of a shot, as I'm sure you guys have heard, and he's also very smooth with the puck.

Think a meaner, more cocky version of Goligoski with a decapitating slapshot. I guess Shero wanted to maintain a good relationship with the other, other Joe (your GM).

Would be great if we can get them to take Jagr instead for the same package.

This right here. Jagr should be worth a fortune. Find us a future center to replace Roy and sell Roy for the BPA you can get. Do it Joe.

Thanks for this!

I'd say that at the begining of the season, Morrow looked like all the time off wasn't enough to fix his back and neck. After about 10 games things settled down and he was playing pretty well, although his skating and passing aren't great anymore. With Jagr and Benn he scored some goals, and he can screen the net on pp decently. Since the Cole trade the lines have been scrambled up a ton so he hasn't really had a chance to develop any chemistry with his linemates.

On MvsW podcast on Thursday(it was this past week for sure), the pens beat writer suggested that they wanted somebody who could drive to the net and open up space for Malkin. Morrow won't power the whole line, but he can do that pretty well still and should do a decent job in the corners and with rebounds near the net.

More from Pronman:

Quote:
Dallas Stars receive D Joe Morrow

Joe Morrow was a first round pick by Pittsburgh in 2011, selected 23rd overall. He was a dynamic player in the WHL in 2010-11 and 2011-12, being named a first team All Star in 2011-12. Morrow's strength is his offensive game; he is a high-end skater, a puck-mover with a bomb of a shot. He has all the tools to be a top three defenseman, and if he were to truly hit his peak, a top pairing defenseman. At this time last year, I would have said that such a projection would have above-average risk attached to it, and this season is evidence why. Morrow has 15 points in 57 AHL games in his rookie pro season, not exactly typical numbers for a stud offensive defenseman. He has struggled with the physical and defensive aspects of the game to the point where his ice time is not that high. He hasn't received penalty killing time or any tough defensive minutes.

Even with his struggles in mind, he is still a top 100 prospect in hockey, but once the new draft class comes in, it will be in the 60-100 range as opposed to the #35 ranking I gave him this summer. He becomes one of Dallas' best prospects along with winger Brett Ritchie and center Radek Faksa. With how well young defensemen Jamieson Oleksiak and Brenden Dillon have looked in the pro ranks, Dallas can afford to be patient with Morrow and let him work out the kinks in his game.

Hopefully he'll go down and play some with Maxime Fortunus.

Shoot ... hopefully Nemeth is back soon.

Oleksiak-Wrenn/Sneep
Morrow-Fortunus
Sloan-Nemeth or Nemeth-Commodore
