My bet is that near the end of the season we send Marty down to Rochester and he clears waivers. We missed the boat on moving one of our many goaltenders. Hoorah Regier!
there wasn't really much of a boat, maybe more of a canoe
kiprusoff went for a second, but calgary would never have taken on biron's 2 mil
markkanen got unloaded so edmonton could get a decent comp pick for leetch
hurme went for a 4th
graham went for a 4th, which i think should give you a good idea of the value of young goaltenders right now
i wouldn't take a 2nd for noronen and biron is basically untradeable at this point
bobby clarke screwed every GM in the league when he traded oulette along with THREE freakin picks for a pending UFA
clarke lowered the bar about eight feet
another reason for me to loathe him
Here are some trades that I think would much better this sally unagressive team.
Valuewise, the Sabres get burned in the first deal BUT I'd honestly consider it. The Sabres would have to overpay to get Cooke so realistically it's not that far off. It wouldn't happen considering salary, but I'd fire up the fax for Cooke + 2nd for Satan or something similar. It's guys like Cooke who need to be sprinkled throughout our lineup and guys like Miro who need to move on. Drury on the 1st, Roy on the 2nd, Cooke on the 3rd, Mair on the 4th...I like it.
With regard to proposal #2, the Isles simply don't want/need Biron. I wonder though if BTW will ultimately toss in 1 mil bucks or so to get a decent return for Marty. I bet Biron + cash could net us a 4th maybe 3rd.
No. 3: If you could have one free punch at any NHL player, who would it be?
Avery: Matt Cooke
No. 4: I hear the Canucks are a bit weary of cleaning up his messes when he runs around hitting people. When did you realize you had to fight once in a while?
Avery: I think that anyone that plays this style of game realizes at some point you HAVE TO FIGHT, whether you win the fight or get your lunch fed to you. It's about a respect thing with your teammates. Guys have been saying that forever about Matt Cooke. I'm not sure if he's ever fought in the NHL. It's not whether you win or lose the fight, it's just that you show up. I remember in Detroit, I told my teammates at one point to not help me in a scrum; I'll be OK. Go get a drink.
It kind of reminds me of what was said of Varada by some guys.
Cooke is a fan favorite in Vancouver and, more importantly, the prototype Buffalonian athlete IMO. He's a 3rd line grinder/agitator who averaged 30-35 points the last three seasons at 500K and leaves it on the ice most nights. He'd fill a Sabres need perfectly.
