Start ****tin on Richards then. You have a gift man. With great power comes great responsibility

The title of this thread needs to change - no need for the "defensive" qualifier in front of player.

I have never been a DZ detractor per se, but I have been one advocating moving him due to the glut of quality players the Rangers have on the left side and the fact that there are only 60 minutes a night to divide between them. These last few games have been a revelation - he's even been getting his slapshot on net with much more regularity. He's been arguably the best player on the ice for all of them. I am much more hesitant to move this player.

Of course, have we all noticed that this tremendous improvement has come with him eating up major minutes on the left side...?

So, the problem still remains. Do you play (and pay) all 3 of McD, Staal and DZ to play on the left side, averaging no more than 20 minutes per game each? Or do you move one for an upgrade elsewhere?

I still say it's bad asset management to keep three of your best players at the same position. So who do you move? Is it still DZ? Or is it maybe Staalsie?

Not an issue while Staal is out - but one that will have to be addressed eventually.

its good bc theres no need to play mcd/staal 25mins a night and burn them out.. get them closer to 20 or less and everyoe will be a lot more fresh.. plus dz should play on the right side with staal.. hopefully he can get comfortable bc thats the perfect combo to have together..

Last 4 games, going back to the game against Carolina where he was tremendous.

He is becoming a very good defensive player. He's been our 2nd best defenseman this season. If he could just find a way to incorporate a little more offense, he'd really take the next step.

He's still only 22, in 3 years I'm fairly confident he'll be regarded as one of the top defenseman in the game. I like his upside a lot.

He still has a ways to go, though, but it'll be worth the wait.

I honestly believe with a more offensive system/coach, Del Z would be putting up 50-65 pts a season. Kid has those instincts.

I just don't think the team works on their offensive play nearly enough.

did anybody figure out what lundqvist was yelling at del zotto for a few minutes before the end of regulation? it was pretty clear he was the one being screamed at. idk if it was losing the puck in the corner or what, but lundqvist flipped his ****.

Only issue is his next contract. He is going to get get paid. Rangers are going to have to let Girardi go if they want to keep Del Z around.

I think its worth it.

I would take Del Zotto over Girardi in a heartbeat, in that situation.

I wouldnt even blink if it came down to keeping MDZ over Girardi. Girardi also happens to be 1 of my favorite Rangers. True warrior but unfortunately harsh calls will need to be made.

Del Zotto has been great the last handful of games but the guy still gives up a horrid turnover here and there. He's almost completely responsible for a golden scoring chance at least once a game.

I would not take Del Zotto over Girardi... Perhaps that changes, but absolutely not. And that's even with Girardi having a not so great stretch of games right now as well.

I don't know. I mean whenever Del Zotto turns it over it's usually either on a rush or via long outlet pass so it's in the neutral zone most of the time. At this stage I feel like we need to live with those mistakes, since frankly I'll take anyone out there trying to be creative and make some things happen.

For every 5 or so of those long passes that don't work you get a perfect one to Gaborik like last night for a breakaway. I feel like that's worth the risk, especially for this team.

As for Girardi vs. Del Zotto, at this point it'd be close, but who's to say by next year whether MDZ continues trending up (and playing against better competition) where the decision will be. I'd lean MDZ, but I've always been a Del Zotto defender on these boards (one of the few it seems).

The Rangers seem to a thing for drafting hockey players with terminally low hockey IQ's(Dubinsky, Del Zotto and Kreider).

Gotta love the people on this forum who never seem to have a problem overrating our players and making them out to something they aren't or will never turn out to be!
Del Zotto has made huge strides in his defensive game this year. I dunno wtf you are watching.

His offensive game is still there. Did you see that pass to Gabby last night? Perfection.

You are just the most negative person on our players. You did the same things with Marc Staal before eventually admitting you were W R O N G. Del Zotto is no different.

i forgot no good defenseman in the league EVER turns over the puck, he knows how to move the puck and hes out there to do it, if he dumped it in everytime or skated up and got it taken away people would ***** about that too. hes been our best defenseman for the last 4 games or so

He's been good lately. The main issue is he has horrendous accuracy with his shot.

He's got one of the better wristers when it comes to dmen in the league as reflected by his generally high shot % (for a dman). He likes picking corners, like a sniper would, so it'll often go wide instead of hitting the goalie. I'd rather him do that then be a logo shooter.

Del Zotto's shot is fine, he just doesn't get it through as often as he should. Same problem Richards has this season. Probably a side effect of the complete lack of movement on the PP. Defenders have an easier time blocking shots when the opposing team is stationary.

Except shooting % doesn't reflect all of the shots that go wide. I'd rather him to shoot low and aim for rebounds and deflections.

Depends on where he's shooting it from. If he has a clear shot on the net from between the circles, I sure as hell don't want him hoping to create a rebound.

If he's shooting from the point or with traffic around the net, then yeah, shoot low and hope for rebounds or deflections.

Anyways, dude's pretty good. To my eyes, he has the most potential of any of the D the Rangers have and when he turns it all on, he is a force out there in a way that none of the other defensemen (even McDonagh or Staal) can be.

However he's not consistent about doing that, and his defense will never be quite as good as McDonagh or Staal's. He could be one of the better, but probably unsung, offensive defensemen in the league if he can bring it consistently and if this team can stop sucking overall on offense

Speaking of shots, if Thomas makes it, we'll have a monstrous shot from the blue line, allowing DZ to be more of a puck mover than a shooter.

You're right, MDZ's +6 on the season indicates he's been on the ice for probably a dozen or so Ranger goals. McDonagh is only a +1. According to NHL.com, MDZ has 21 give aways with McDonagh having 20. If you want to talk about bad turnovers, giveaways, and positioning, we can always look at 99% of the plays Girardi makes in the defensive zone.

Guess you didn't read my last post. Yes, the past 4 games or so, he has been our best d-man and arguably our best player. There's no question he has great upside and he is very young with lotsa time to develop. The biggest issue I and others have had with him is his propensity to look completely lost on the defensive end(at times) and his inability to hit the net with his shot.
Time will tell with DZ but at some point, he needs to reach that next plateau and stay there w/o a return to those mind numbing decisions and turnovers in the defensive end.

One other thing; you're 100% right, I am very negative about our players but that just goes with the territory of being a fan for over 50 years and watching one of the worst managed sports franchises in the history of professional sports(1 cup in 73 years!).

So if I rag on our players, be it Gaborik, Richards, Staal, DZ, Stepan, whomever, you'll just have to humor me and accept it for what it is and who it's from! Lol
