Carolina Hurricanes: Playoffs or no playoffs?

Going into this season, with the notable additions of Jordan Staal and Alex Semin, I thought for sure the Carolina Hurricanes would capture the Southeast Division Crown and be a real threat in the postseason.

Fast forward to the vast of the majority of this season and they found great chemistry in their top line of Semin-Staal-Tlustý and as team were performing as well as reasonably expected.

March 3: Cam Ward goes down with a sprained MCL in his knee and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

Since he has fallen the Hurricanes have been relying on a tandem of Dan Ellis and Justin Peters and have gone 3-5-1 falling down the Eastern standings sitting in a tie with the New York Rangers for the 8th and final playoff spot.

Note: Thanks to the Washington Capitals they have 2 games in hand on the Winnipeg Jets, and only sit 2pts behind.

So what do you guys think?

Do the Carolina Hurricanes make the Stanley Cup Playoffs?

Those voting yes, what place do you think they'll come in?

3rd, 6th, 7th or 8th?

I think they'll grab the SE Division crown. Winnipeg has a godawful -15 goal differential and are somehow 1st in the division. That'll rectify itself soon enough.

The Canes have been struggling lately but Cam Ward out isn't a good excuse. Ellis has been outstanding and Justin Peters has been solid as well.

This team is suffering from a profound lack of confidence and "want-to" right now. They have also been wrecked by injuries all season. A lot of that is now behind them but losing Justin Faulk is a huge blow. He was really holding the blue line together and you can see the disarray with his absence.

Still, they are only 2 points behind the Jets with 2 games in hand, and just happen to be playing two of their next three against the Jets. Tuesday night will be the turning point of the season, one way or another. If they come out and put on a good performance at home and beat Winnipeg, then I think they are off and running. If they lose and show the same kind of beaten-down, slumped shouldered pouty attitude they have shown the last few games, then they might as well pack it in and cancel the rest of their games.

The South East is so bad, the best team is 3rd only because of the division lead thing and the 2nd best is 9th. That's just laughable at best. Because of that, I think even the Caps have a shot at still finishing 3rd.

I hope the Caps finish in 8th somehow. Caps/Pens would be a great 1st round series.

If they can go 9-7-2 or better, then they're almost assuredly in - source

-14, and that was pretty much from the last two games losing 4-0 and 6-1 to the Caps.

As for the OP, I think if the Canes want to make it into the playoffs this year they're going to have to win their division. There are two games between the Canes and Jets this week that are crucial to both team's odds of winning the division and making the playoffs.

Pretty much official now, Canes are done. This team simply does not care.

Being better at hockey will win you more games than "caring" more about hockey. Teams that "don't care" are usually the same teams that just aren't good enough.

If they lose to Toronto on Thursday, I highly doubt they catch up.

that would be the only way IMO but with Ward out it's going to be tough for them to beat out Winnipeg and Washington IMO.

OK, then, watch these guys float and make half-hearted attempts at playing the game, and tell me it has nothing to do with a lack of caring.

Believe me, I wish it were a matter of "they just aren't good enough". That I could understand. This, though, is something else. People were booing them at home tonight and that is just not something that happens. Like, ever.

Yes. Professionals who are among the best in the world at what they do, all of whom spent a lifetime of training and practicing for this chance at a lucrative career that lasts just a few years on average... Many of whom are playing for new contracts or to not be demoted, get to a point in the season where they have a chance at the playoffs, and collectively as a group decide "you know what? forget it. Lets just mail it in".

THAT is why they won't reach the playoffs. I'm sure you are correct. I am convinced.

Toronto/NJD/NYR will get the 6th-8th spots IMO. I think the Canes only hope is the Division.

God, I hope not.
Nearly every damn time they make the playoffs, they wind up making life miserable for the Devils.

I hope so, but I voted no. Our only hope is to grab a low seed. We suck in division games (3-9 this year WTF???).

Yes they will. Too much talent and leadership on that roster to choke away with the rest of the year. They'll beat out the Rangers for eighth, IMO.

I hope so. Like the players on the canes, although was kind of disappointed to see Jokinen go.

How do they not have a good amount of leadership? A lot of players on that team have a reputation for being good leaders.
