All time WJC tid bits

At the last Oiler game media was handed out a WJC media guide and it has some interesting tid bits in it as I read through it. Such as:

All time medal records:

As the former USSR the Soviets NEVER finished lower than 4th as they did in 1982. (Ignoring the year both they and Canada were DQF (1997) for the legendary brawl). They won bronze just twice but silver 3 times and gold an impressive 11 times.

Russia though has finished 6th and 7th in the past ten years.

The U.S. has NEVER won the gold. They got silver once, bronze twice but seem to finish in 5th or 6th consistently. (they might medal this year though).

Germany has NEVER finished higher than 5th and they've only done that once (in '81).

On the other hand, Switzerland HAS gotten a bronze once, in '98.

Czechoslovakia NEVER won the gold but the Czech Republic has won it twice since '94.

I'll post more interesting things as I see them.

As always, you have posted some great information, Guy.

Just to clarify, though, Canada and the then-USSR were disqualified in 1987, not 1997. I remember very well the atrocious officiating, the puzzling move of turning out the lights, and the "conversation" in the CBC studios between Don Cherry and Brian Williams in the aftermath. The TV picture quality wasn't as good as it is today, and the WJC was more of a hockey afterthought than it is now, but that was a most memorable event for those few of us who caught it.

Does anybody know who the Oiler prospects are in the WJC? Deslauries and Brodziac both got cut for Canada, but we have to have some other ones playing. Someone help me out

I think he´s the only guy playing this year.

Niinimäki is injured.
Joukov got his swedish citizenship this week (don´t know if he´s available and if he would be selected).
Pouliot is injured and Brodziak + Deslauriers got cut.

Weak year for Edmonton on the WJC

Jesse is too old to play in the tournament. Pouliot has the injury that has kept him out of action for Rimouski for about a month.

Joukov's citizenship probably came too late in order for him to be selected for Sweden.

Right on ALL accounts momentai... and yeah it was 1987 not 1997 with the big brawl... I knew it, just bad typing fingers that night.

I don't think Pouliot would have made the team anyway.
