From Elliotte Friedman's 30 thought's today:

Quote:
18. The biggest NCAA decision to come this week may be Jacob Trouba's. Michigan's incredible streak of 22 consecutive NCAA berths ended Sunday. It's been rumoured that Winnipeg's first-round pick in 2012 (ninth overall) would turn pro once his college season closed. Time to find out if that's true.
Full article, which contains a couple other Jets thoughts, here.

Because that's the only reason to go to college.

Just because he's heard rumours doesn't say much. He doesn't say how credible the rumours are. I hope he's right about it.

Friedman is imo the second best hockey journalist behind only Mackenzie. He should go work for tsn and get off the sinking ship that cbc has become

Well if he wants to go to college for other reasons that's fine. He's going to be a millionaire, he doesn't need free college.

I'd love to see Trouba sign.

I really didn't think it was all that Likely but with all the media chatter right now I'm starting to think it might happen.

The Jets defense is in such a weird state right now though, we have so many bodies, hard to figure out right now whats going on with that.

I heard and read the rumors about him leaving after the college season this year, but now I'm thinking he stays one more year.

If he made the NCAA tourney, that may have made a difference, but now he has another reason to go back for one more year. I don't see 3 or 4 yrs, but I do think he'll be there next year.

After watching the game Sunday, he's close, imo, but can use more time. But I fully believe, when he finally comes to Jets and after a couple of years in the NHL, he'll be a top pairing dman and a special player.

I saw some drew doughty and alex pietrangelo (though trouba is more physical) in his game. When he gains some experience and huddy coaching, he'll be a very solid contributor, imo.

If he signs he'll be eligible to play AHL until the end of the caps season. I wonder if he'll sign without an NHL assurance though.

Really think the Trouba family will not sign until he is given a 1 way contract.....and I don't think the Jets are ready to start burning ELC years until they are sure he can handle NHL minutes......

I don't believe a 1-way ELC exists.

There is no such thing as a one-way rookie contract, but I imagine he will want some type of assurance for leaving early if he does.

Makes sense - he'll want some sort of assurance that he'll be playing with the Jets, even if the Jets can't give him a 1-way contract. It's hard to be sure if Trouba is ready, but the Jets have clearly been spending quite a bit of time and resources to try to assess his development.

Impossible. No one can offer him that type of contract. He has to accept a two-way entry level contract to enter the league.

It's the same for everybody.

Even older players, like Damien Brunner or Roman Cervenka, have to do it when it's their first NHL contract.

If he's considering leaving college, it would be wise to sign now to get up to a dozen games with the AHL now to help prove your case for playing with the big club next year.

The Jets could guarantee him his 5 games up with the big club this year - that's an extra $100k in his pocket.

But he would lose his college eligibility in the future if he did that....

@TSNBobMckenzie

WPG prospect Jacob Trouba, the Univ of Michigan D whose NCAA season ended Sun, taking a couple of days to decide if he should turn pro now.

But he'll still be able to go back to college if he chooses to in the future.. Pro hockey > NCAA hockey. He'll be rich, he can afford it

No he isn't , but he stated he felt he was pro ready before any other national source as far as I can recall.
