I would LOVE Mike Smith. Although he is helped by PHX system he HAS to be better than Scrivens. Nice vet backup that we can roll a 1A/1B with him and Reimer.
Also, IF he goes to free agency, we'd be one of only a handful of teams showing legitimate interest. NJ, Calgary (if Kipper is traded), Edmonton, maybe TB (but they traded for Lindback already, and Smith has already been there, may not want to go back), NYI (but they may resign Nabokov), and a handful of other teams.
So he's an Ontario guy, and we're one of probably 3-4 teams that would show legitimate interest. I think we'd have a great shot at signing him.
With NCAA free agent Andrej Sustr signing with Tampa last week, the top available collegiate free agent is now Western Michigan defender Danny DeKeyser.
TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reported via Twitter that DeKeyser might also be close to making a decision on his NHL future.
While McKenzie stated that the Toronto Maple Leafs had high interest in DeKeyser under former GM Brian Burke, the front runners are now believed to be Detroit, St. Louis, Anaheim and Edmonton.
NHL execs are expected to make pitches to DeKeyser's camp in person in Toronto mid-week with the defender expected to have his equipment ready to immediately join whichever organization he chooses to sign with.
It’s not just the games. Trade speculation and actual transactions are heating up. Jarome Iginla officially wants out of Calgary, or so it seems, and the weirdness of Dallas trading away its heart-and-soul captain for futures while occupying a playoff berth in the west is perplexing.
There’s going to be more of all of this. The Maple Leafs, at the very least, should be in the playoff race until the final week, which is something new. Trade-wise, few expect anything big, but GM Dave Nonis is nosing around, and the addition of depth players and possibly insurance in the form of a veteran goalie make sense.
