These advance stats that people are trying make work the same way it does in baseball is just not smart.

So what does that mean does it mean he is a bad D cause they have lots of shots on goal when he is on the ice.

Too hard to use analytic stats like Sabremetrics to judge a player.

So they have most shots against maybe

- because he plays 25 mins a night against other teams top line.
- Where are the shots coming from? Outside and non threatening scoring chances?
- Who else is on the ice with him maybe he plays with a bad partner or the line gets beat in the defensive zone which results in more shots and not Murray's fault.

Nothing against the poster just passing along info but these advance stats people are starting to quote just don't reflect a player and game situations especially when hockey is a game played by 5 teamates on the ice and not a 1 on 1 situation like in baseball.

Can confirm the #pens have acquired Douglas Murray. Sounds like picks heading back to the #sharks.
seems like a steep price but the Pens suck at drafting anyways lol

His advanced stats are awful, and the eye test hasn't done him any favors either IMO.

He's huge, and hits, but that's about it.

Gill was/is a solid player though. Remember how the next year he was playing 24 minutes a night on the first pairing and held Crosby goalless in the 6 games he was assigned to shut him down? (Crosby scored in one game but Gill was out with an injury)

Frustrating player. Works hard, but small, very low hockey-IQ, no vision, not particularly fast/strong and awful, awful shot selection.

Goalie could be square to him at a bad angle on a 3 on 0, with one guy alone in the high slot and the other back door and he shoots it right into the crest. A lot of scoring chances evaporate on this guy's stick.

Normally a guy in his position would be killing penalties. That, over the years, they've used Sidney, Dupuis, Cooke, Sutter/Staal, skip Kennedy and go to the fourth line for the rest says a lot about what they think about his ability (or lack thereof) to read the play.

So the Pens just made the Sharks better by taking this useless pylon.

Do they offer valet service and had a call in too many in Pitt?

I will LOL if its actually 2 second rounders.

Will be interesting to see how adding 2 physical players will effect the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Murray just needs to play a Hal Gill like role. Some big hits, and keep the front of the crease clear. That's really something we've been missing all year.

SO...you guys know that Mark Eaton has been suiting up for the Pens recently, right? Like...there's no way that Murray can be as bad as Eaton.

Like, Eaton's effort has been commendable and everything but, yeah I can't see any way that Murray doesn't at least help this team marginally.

The last couple of games, however, he's starting to look more like the Kennedy of old.
hes lost alot more puck battles this year than previous, but i agree hes been better the last few games

No doubt Shero wanted to make this team tougher to play against. We did need a crease-clearing defenseman badly.

A team can never have too many NHL-quality defensemen on their roster in the playoffs, especially when the injuries start to compile.

Wow. Depending in the return I feel like the pens are making all the right moves for a serious run. Murray and Morrow may both be old, slowing down and underperforming, but they still bolster and add depth and experience to an already strong team.

Orpik - Martin
Letang - Eaton
Niskanen - Murray
Despres, Engelland and Eaton

Are the Pens expecting a lot of injuries or what?

I'm assuming more moves will be coming if it's indeed just picks for Murray with 2 roster players coming in and none going out. This makes 9 Defenseman on the roster right now.
