Maybe we give Schultz more than 30 NHL games before assessing exactly where he winds up on a depth chart for the next 5 years?

I'd think Whitney's value is very similar to Murray, as I actually proposed a swap of the two a while ago. Anyway, there are both bottom pairing dmen, that are UFA's, that help in different areas of the game. Whitney needs to go, and I would be more than happy with a return similar to the one San Jose got.

It should be a second and middling prospect.

@Bob_Stauffer

If u read between the lines of what Justin Schultz had to say he will likely be involved in the recruitment of Danny Dekeyser

Interesting...

Smid will not be traded unless he's indicated to the management, he intends to test free agency, in which case they would be wise to move him for the best package available.

Smyth's experience could have been invaluable to any play-off team, but I can't imagine they can trade him with an extra year attached to his contract (Thank you, Steve Tambellini!)

Ditto for Belanger.

Petrell, Potter, Peckham are simply not NHL players--nobody will give up even a late round pick for any of them.

So that realistically leaves Hemsky, Whitney, Jones and Gagner.

Whitney should be able to fetch a return similar to Douglas Murray (2nd rounder or an equivalent prospect).
Jones--no more than 3rd round pick.

Hemsky and Gagner should hold good value for teams looking for secondary scoring. Hopefully, if these guys get moved, we get some real NHL players that meet team's needs.

I saw that tweet. What did Schultz say that he would be referring to?

Yeah, but Brendan Morrow shouldn't get you a top defensive prospect either. It's the silly season I guess.

I doubt it..I'd say this has worked out pretty good for Justin. I don't think he was expecting to be challenging for the cup anytime soon. It was more around his getting time with the NHL club in all situations and growing with a young nucleus. That's still the case and despite all the teeth knashing, etc (including my own), the Oil, with the right moves...including Dekeyser<...will have a bright future.

Do they actually know each other or is it more he'll explain why he came to Edmonton?

As a side note what does Briere's concussion do now? Philly going to try replace him?

Bruce Garrioch ‏@SunGarrioch 1m
The Carolina Hurricanes made a hard pitch for the D Douglas Murray but were outbid by Pittsburgh's Ray Shero. #Tradetracker

I wonder if it was because they knew Iginla's asking price and figured they'd take the next best thing before someone else does?

I'm aware that there are always diamonds in the rough in College FA's but you'll have to excuse my ignorance. If this DeKeyser kid is all he's being pumped up to be, why was he never drafted?

It doesn't hurt to add to the cupboard, but what's the hype?

I'm kinda with you, but to me I don't care if they don't pan out. Free prospects I'll take all day. Sometimes you find a gem.

No question, but to me 2 prospects and a pick isn't too much, however I was just saying "what people SHOULD go for" and what they will go for are often different.

Late bloomer with steady improvement. Originally I think was just playing hockey on a partial scholarship. Taking the Dennis Rodman approach I guess.

You do see some late round d-men like Duncan Keith popping up, I'm sure teams are seeing him as a way to prop up their D without having to pay a ton or trade anybody.

He's a late bloomer. Wasn't on anyone's radar back then.

He was playing at a small Michigan high school during his draft year. Had to play a year in the BCHL then a year in the USHL before he got an offer from WMU.

Prospects don't develop in a linear fashion. With defensive prospects development is even harder to gauge.

Dekeyser's development over the last 2 years is what is making him attractive to teams. Dan Girardi was never drafted.......he's now a top pairing dman.....

Briere was being a little turd regarding his no-trade clause but now that he's out indefinitely with a concussion the Flyers won't be able to trade him anyway.

Whitney WAS a better d-man. Right now he's basically an oft-injured borderline NHL player who's had trouble holding a roster spot on one of the worst clubs in the league. I would not be surprised if a desperate team looking for depth and puck-moving ability coughs up a 2nd round pick for him, but I would not be surprised, if teams look at other options.
