The Race is On: Burn the Boats

With only 16 games left in the 2012-13 season, the Leafs find themselves in better position than most pundits would have predicated at the outset of the truncated campaign. Following a win against the Boston Bruins – the Leafs’ kryptonite over the last couple of years – the Buds remained in 6th in the East, one point up on the 7th place Devils, and 3 points back of the 5th place Senators. As an aside, what the Sens have been able to accomplish with 4 stars injured at various points throughout the season (Michalek, Spezza, Karlsson, Anderson) is nothing short of spectacular. On to more important matters…

It's an idiom. Means no way back, only option is to charge.

A reference to when Cortes allegedly ordered his men to burn the ships that had brought them to Mexico in order to remove the temptation of retreat, or doing anything other than going forward and conquering.

edit: was beaten to the punch

I didn't know it was Cortes. Learn something every day.

16 points in 16 games will do it, but that back to back against the Rangers is critical.

There's no option to retreat so we can't go back for the tank .

A good policy for this season. Just keep moving ahead.

Thanks for the stats - this makes it so much more real...

If our boys go 8-8, we've still got a 94% chance of getting in

Regarding burning the boats:
I also came across it reading Sun Tzu's Art of War. Same idea though, with no way back you're motivated to move forward into enemy territory.

10-6. Calling it. 20 points. Plan your playoff parties now, gents.

OR: 8-4-4. This is probably more accurate. Strong finish to a surprise season. One of those OTL's is tonight.

If we get a win tonight we've basically made it. 2 wins in a row vs. Boston would be great.

I've started scoreboard watching, and rooting against the teams we're competing with. It would be great to see some playoff hockey I actually care about again. Go Leafs Go!

So much can change in so little time at the beginning of the year that I only really concern myself with how the Leafs are doing.

I always though that was only done by cash strapped teams and ones that had a real shot at the cup.

Dallas who really could use the PO money just moved their Captain, a pending UFA.

SJ a team who's time as a contender is ticking away, just moved a UFA.

Neither team brought back anything that can help them now.

And arguments as to why we should not move ours, could easily be applied to those two teams also.
those two players were expendable pieces that weren't really helping their teams. Mac and Bozak are useful pieces to the Leafs and are helping the team win games.

Amazing. I'd be happy with .500, let's finish strong here and not make this dramatic like in years past.

I moved the Bozak\MacArthur UFA posts to the Trade Speculation Thread. If you wish to discuss that, please post there.

This thread is of a different subject matter.

i consider 9 wins to be the goal. i think 10 would effectively lock up 6th, which we obviously want, but 9 should mean playoffs and have a decent chance of leaving us 6th.
