Sorting through the post-deadline muck

who goes now? Should have see the writing on the wall when Letang was put on IR today. we have aqcuired 2 players without trading any of our roster players in return. so who gets traded, cut, sent down whatever?

Bortuzzo, Engellend, Kennedy, Glass?

This is a good place to address what has been brought up in the Murray thread.

The roster limit disappears at the trade deadline. If there isn't a trade to be made to clear the space before then and either Malkin or Letang is ready to return, a viable option is to temporarily send down Bennett and/or Despres since both are waiver-exempt.

Trade deadline passes, they can come back up. So consider this a preemptive strike, folks. There is no need to freak out if either player has to spend a few days on the farm. It's preferable to dumping any of the current guys on waivers.

OK, maybe not Glass. But still.

Post your ideal rosters/line combos here.

Just to add some context:

--According to Shero, Despres has not been involved in any of his trade discussions. He, in fact, said today he expects all eight (now nine with Murray) of his NHL defensemen to be on the team after the deadline.

--Bylsma said a week ago that Bennett is here to stay for the stretch run. What's in flux is which line he plays on.

--Sounds like the initial plan is for Morrow to play with Malkin and Neal on the second line and Murray to play with Niskanen on the third pairing. But with Malkin and Letang still day-to-day, there's obviously some patchwork to do in the meantime.

--Feel free to dip into PP/PK personnel as well. Shero and Bylsma said Morrow slots into the second power-play unit to start.

Trevor Smith was just sent down so there's one slot. One to go I think. Likely Elmer or Sunshine will be send down until the April 3 deadline passes, at which point we can expand the roster to no less than 37 players.

I expect the Pens to go 7D and for Malkin to get regular shifts with both Morrow and Bennett on the LW. Playing fewer, more efficient minutes will help both of them.

we have 9 D now, so what do we do to get to 7? send Despres down until April 3rd? cut someone else?

Trevor Smith was demoted today in order to clear the initial spot for Murray. Right now we don't really have a timetable for Letang and Malkin. But there's zero need to rush either of them back at this point.

If they happen to be 100 percent later this week, then the options are either trade someone for a draft pick or send the rookies to Wilkes-Barre for a few days.

What I'd do:

Kunitz - Crosby - Dupuis
Morrow - Malkin - Neal
Cooke - Sutter - Bennett
Kennedy - Vitale - Adams
Glass, Jeffrey

Despres - Letang
Orpik - Martin
Murray - Niskanen
Eaton - Engelland
Bortuzzo

PP1:
Kunitz - Crosby - Neal
Martin/Letang - Malkin

PP2:
Morrow - Sutter - Bennett
Martin/Letang - Niskanen

PK Forwards:
Sutter - Cooke
Dupuis - Adams
Vitale - Kunitz
Crosby for faceoffs

PK Dmen
Orpik - Martin
Murray - Letang

Until next Thursday it's 23 total, skaters and goalies included. The 20 number is how many of them you can dress for a game -- 18 and 2.

oh, i see thanks

so if Malkin or Letang come back before next Thursday, the easy play is to send down Bennett or Despres temporarily

Hey, a decent 2nd PP!

I've actually noticed the 2nd PP getting some decent chances over the last few weeks which is a change from the last 4-5 years. Not something worth complaining about, just an observation...

Wouldn't be surprised if Bennett or Despres goes down until April 3rd and then gets called back up after the deadline.

Mr Shero said, during his post Doug Murray trade press availability, something to the effect of
"...if Letang comes back before the trade deadline, we'll have to make a roster move..."

What do you guys think about Cooke/TK on the 4th line? Heck of a line compared to other 4ths in the league. Jeffrey/Sutter/Bennett on the 3rd?

putting aside Glass hate and Vitale love, I think it's a mistake to sit Vitale's face-off skills in the POs

What else could we expect Shero to say? "Yeah, I'm going to trade away one or two players on our roster soon." Sure, he could be telling the truth, but he's not going to openly admit he's going to trade someone on the current roster.

With Murray and Bortuzzo on the team, I really don't see why the Penguins need Engo any longer. I also wouldn't be surprised if Kennedy and/or Glass are moved by the deadline. Wouldn't mind some more size on that fourth line.

Pretty much, yep.
Morrow, Bennett and Dupuis can move up and down.
Kennedy can move up and down.

Morrow is also in the PK forwards mix, which essentially makes Glass expendable and probably waived possibly.

I agree, Vitale has had 3 seconds of SH time per game and is our best FO guy with over 60 % it boggles my mind why Dan doesn't at least let him take Face offs on the PK when he's in the lineup. Adams is at 40% and Glass at 36%!
