Other: Give each team one point if no one scored in OT, but if any two teams are tied in the standings at the end of the season, then shootout wins should be the tiebreaker.

Option 3. Use it but only after an extended overtime of 10 minutes.

The World Cup final is the single biggest sports game there is. AINEC. There won't ever be a hockey game that has any semblance of the same worldwide significance as a world cup.

About the shootout, I guess it's tough. As someone said earlier, the hockey fan in me says scrap it but the sports fan in me says ties are boring. I guess I'd say 10 minutes 4 on 4 and then the shootout would be better. Personally I find OT game winners more exciting than shootout winners, so I'd like to see more of those. Shootouts are a bit of a gimmick in that 3 players and a goalie can win a game for a team of 20 guys, but as long as it isn't deciding playoff games it's OK.

Scrap it.

Only problem is they seem to be avoiding ties like the plague, so I doubt they would scrap it.

I voted to scrap it. In the beginning I felt it was a good idea but now I see it as a gimmick. To me the shootout brings down the quality and integrity of the game. Please Gary can we go 10 minute OT.
Please do so starting next season. I understand that games ending in ties are not good for the league.

Scrap it. 4-on-4 for 5 minutes and then 3-on-3 until a goal is scored.

It sucks watching an awesome game be determined by a shootout.

3 point system! Games are too long already, let alone with more overtime. I would keep it the way it is, but give teams more incentive to win it sooner. I think it would be awesome to see teams who really need the 3 points in a tight playoff race going crazy for the win before overtime hits.

I love some of these suggestions.

You hate the idea that an individual effort decides a team game, yet many of you propose going to a 3 on 3 format, which is still dimishining the entire concept of team play anyway. You have 2 more guys on the ice per team than you do during a shootout. I bet none of you would complain if a penalty shot decided a game. That's still an individual effort, yet no one complains about that.

Continuous OT is even worse. That has no place during the grind of a regular season. What happens if a game goes to 4OT and one of the teams has a game the very next night? Players would end up too fatigued. It's the anti-shootout. Great in the playoffs, terrible for the regular season.

Bring back ties. Really? Who wants to see games end with no winner?

A player is awarded a penalty shot because he had a clear cut chance to score and was interfered with. That's why nobody would complain about it, it happened during the game.

10 minute 4v4 OT then shootout. i really hate ties and 3v3 is a bigger gimmick than a shootout, and for obvious reasons going past 70 minutes of gameplay is a little ridiculous

Do an extended 4-on-4, then a shorter 3-on-3, then a shootout. That will drastically reduce the number of games that go to a shootout.

Those of you voting to scrap it and bring back ****ing ties are out of your mind. We really want to go back to that?

Scrap it entirely along with OT and just go W-L-T, or keep the OT and do a 3 point system. Anything else is silly.

In an 82 game season I really don't like the idea of guys potentially playing 70+ minutes a night. The season is tiring enough as is, teams not returning home until wee hours of the morning etc etc. End the game as soon as you can even if that means keep the shootout. I like the current system because it keeps teams much more fresh than a longer OT or worse continuous OT.

I must admit, I'm pleasantly surprised by the results of that poll. Now will someone forward it to the biggest idiot, Gary Bettman?
