that's not how it works. He's a UFA, he's going to get a contract based upon his production this year, not next year. You either want him to walk, or you pay him based on the information you have. The information we have right now is he is producing very well, against tough competition, and the underlying stats say he should be able to maintain it or improve.

That's all there is to it. If Doug Wilson goes to him and says "I want you to prove you can reproduce it next year" all he has to say is "cya later" because he at this point owes nothing to the Sharks. He can sign whatever contract he wants with whoever he wants, and they are going to pay him based on advanced stats.

On the second part, agreed. But I don't think that can account for such a massive performance difference.

Remember, the fundamental question is, is Irwin's production over 18 games a true measure of his expected production?
"Generally" ..mmm maybe but really it depends on the factors I mentioned.

As far as a true measure goes. 18 games is never a true measure but neither is the first 3 years often times. That's sports for ya.

I'd say his overall performance thus far has absolutely been a good measure though. Very good offensively and pretty damn poor/inconsistent defensively. I'd expect those 2 things to even out a bit making him a solid 2 way defender who will always be able to shoot the puck. He does possess certain skills that can't really be taught or coached and that's huge. Probably 1.3ish million short term contract I'd guess.

#Sharks moving Murray off the back end look for SJ to soon extend pending UFA D Matt Irwin to a multi year deal.
When? Soon.

How much? Who knows.

If it's DW signing him? 4 years, 10 million dollars like Murray back in his day.

I am going to take a guess and say that the Irwin contract is going to be an albatross going forwards.

Just too many things can go wrong. Plus, he's a UFA, so I think DW will have to overpay...

He's played in 21 NHL games. He's not getting that much.

But, but,but...he is a UFA. And teams will probably be willing to overpay on the off-chance that his 21 games are not a fluke.

He has impressive statistics, great counting stats, and good physical skills.

DW can't ask him to "prove himself" since there will be at least one GM willing to pay him without that proof...

Just a suspicion.

Agreed.

I am expecting $2m per season for 2 years.

You can't be serious. Braun was more proven and got $3.75 over 3 seasons.

Not saying he's worth it, saying that's what I expect

I hope they don't pay Irwin over $2M. You guys remember how good Braun and Demers were in their first season? They looked they were ready to be solid top-4 dmen the next season. Small sample size, baby. Package him with Clowe and get something nice if he wants over $2M.

Then again, he'll win 5 consecutive Norris trophies so might as well pay him $6M from the get go.
