Pretty bad numbers even when you consider that he plays easy minutes. Goal scorer that can't play defense so hardly "great".
not arguing that briere doesnt suck right now....bc he absolutely does

but if you are arguing that briere has been anything short of "great" for us in the playoffs, you simply have not watched the games...

....if thats not what you are arguing, then my apologies

Ummm, with Briere it is pretty telling considering that the guy does not play defensive minutes.

I don't think he's arguing Briere wasn't a very good offensive player in the playoffs. He's suggesting that that production was at least partially offset by his atrocious defensive play, and that Briere's playoff reputation tends to rely solely on the former while ignoring the latter.

Agree or not, I don't think that's an unreasonable position.

Patrick Kane is a career -11 in the playoffs, Stamkos is a career -14 in the regular season (-5 in the playoffs), Henrick Sedin is a career -15 in the playoffs and his brother is a -9. Do you want me to keep going? Are they not great players?

You're really comparing elite point producers to Briere? You can forgive guys of defensive deficiencies when they're gamebreakers.

Bobby Clarke ended his career +506. That's how you play some hockey.

I agree plus/minus is a pretty useless stat when using it on forwards especially. But that doesn't take away the fact that Briere's a black hole defensively whether its regular season or playoffs.

Yes, you did in the first post that I responded to. It's a dumb idea to even suggest, and I'm not convinced that Briere would miraculously get better just by moving back to center.

I said that if Briere played center with Hartnell, he'd produce more. I've never said that we should do it.

It's a lot easier to play defense when you can grab guys by the neck as slash their ankles.

That Bobby Clarke sure was a multitasker.

Hello mods... can we get this thread back on track instead of the Danny Briere defense trial that's currently going on in here???

The injury could block the buyout too. If he's on the IR at the end of the season, he's ineligible to be bought out IIRC.

Outside of '10-'11 where he was playing unreal hockey in the playoffs his numbers are not that good.

'10-'11...30 Pts +9
4 other years...42 Pts -17

And like I said he plays easy minutes so figure in that all his PP points and his +/- looks even worse.

Hes always scored big goals and used to be money on the PP so i tend to give him a pass sometimes but his 2 way play is awful, his corner work is below par and he has zero physical game. So like I said hardly great.

Also FYI I've had season tickets the last 4 years so I've watched my fair share thank you.

He will get better and he will be gone either by trade or buyout.

They can play together on the fourth line. Hartnell has been equally as bad this season as Briere. Maybe its the broken foot but he looks slower than usual and is behind too many plays. Actually, I'd consider him to be a buyout possibility if they can deal Briere.

Son of a *****...I guess we could still trade him at the draft, but he'd fetch way more at the deadline. Get better Danny...so we can trade you.

Actually the opposite. Same with the Kanes, Sedins, etc mentioned upthread. Their +/- numbers look worse because a lot of their scoring is coming on the PP and not counted in the +/-.

I'm not arguing he isn't horrible defensively; he is. He's small, not good on draws, and not gritty or strong along the boards so you can't really shift him to the wing. But calling him a net negative based on a stat that's skewed against guys who play a lot of PP minutes isn't fair.
