Think he's like 20, he's come a far way. Most people call him a bust because its been i think 3 drafts since I think we took him. He was raw and a huge project then, most people want results immediately, doesn't happen that way... especially with defensemen.
When he is called up, he will be 3rd pairing with some sheltered minutes. The process to get him up to his full potential will take a while, he is only 21 (next month). I don't mind watching him along the way.

The concept is that even a 33 year old, 3rd pairing physical crease clearer has that kind of value... what would a 25 year old, 2nd pairing player in that mold be worth?

Yeah, as it should be with most prospects. McIlrath is not ahead of schedule but he's not behind, either. From the moment he was picked Rangers management the rational members of the fanbase knew it was going to be a long time before we saw him at the NHL level. He'll battle for an NHL spot next training camp but certainly wouldn't be hurt by another few months or even a full year in the AHL. Maybe McIlrath doesn't turn into an NHL defenseman. Nobody is a lock. But we're not even close to the point where we can call him a failed pick and all indications are that he's right on schedule for where he was projected to be.

time will tell how he plays in the NHL, but man it would be nice to have some real nastiness on the blue line wear a blueshirt.

If both Fast and Zuccarello get legitamite top 9 minutes on this team who sits? Who's gets pushed down to the 4th line.
I would imagine that Boyle and Pyatt get moved to the fourth line and Powe/new berry get pushed out of the lineup although I like Powe over Boyle and Pyatt cause of the energy and speed he brings.

Sorry if I missed it: is Fast still only going to be coming over for just a few weeks and then return to Sweden for the WHC? Or did they resolve that issue? Thanks...

I like Newbury over Boyle, but the main problem is Boyle can PK. I'm not sure Newbury can. He might be able to but I don't watch Whale games. I can't see Fasth taking over for Powe.

I would like to see Fasth play in the AHL. Get adjusted to NA rinks then come up for the playoffs.

My spidey senses are telling me the Rangers are going to trade some of these players whether it be Boyle, Pyatt or make a big splash and move Gaborik.

That article says he has to be back by April 15th for WC camp. Seems silly to bring him over for a few weeks only to ship up back to Sweden.

He can decline the invitation and remain on the roster. Now, as to where he plays, after reading the NHL/SEL agreement, it seems his release to the NHL had a stipulation that he would have to remain in the NHL, so my interpretation is he won't be elligable, per terms in the agreement, to play for the Whale. Media is all over the place with it though.

Katie Strang spoke to Bill Daly and Kurt Overhardt

Fasth can get out of the commitment with the national team

Quote:
It is believed that Swedish winger Jesper Fast will join Zuccarello soon. The Rangers would like to bring the 21-year-old, whose team HV 71 of the Swedish Elite League was recently eliminated from playoff contention, to New York to see what he can do.

Fast is a candidate for the Swedish national team for the world championships, however, which would require him to opt out of that invitation in order to play in New York.

Fast is under NHL contract, but has been on loan to Sweden for the year. To forgo his obligation overseas, Fast and or the Swedish National Team has to "confirm he has no intention of participating," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com via email. Fast's agent, Kurt Overhardt, doesn't foresee that as a problem.

"Everything has been positive," Overhardt told ESPNNewYork.com when reached via phone Monday morning. "We hope to have a resolution in the next day or two."
http://espn.go.com/new-york/nhl/stor...lo-sources-say

Piecing together the information. Fasth is arriving today. He will have a physical soon. He is not obligated to return by April 15 if he opts outs of the invitation. He is no guarantee to play for the Swedes. So he gets denied the opportunity to begin his NHL/pro career by being required to return by April 15 and then may not make the Swedish team. Priceless.

I think it's a good deal since it enables him to go back and play for his country if he wants to. Or do you think the Rangers would let him if this clause didn't exist and he wanted to?

Good work indeed! But can you clarify the details? Because the various media reports are all over the place. Specifically:

- Can he play for 1) the Whale only, 2) the Rangers only or 3) either?

- Is he 1) required to return to Sweden for the WCH or 2) does he have the ability to decline the invitation at his choice?

Also, we see Zooks is coming over as per your second prediction, but as I recall, the little birdie was telling you it might not necessarily be to play for the Rangers. The media has him joining the team in Ottawa. Are you still hearing he's going to be playing in another NHL sweater soon...?

Nobody knows yet.
Best case scenario is he starts in Hartford, adjusts well to the smaller rink after a couple of games and gets called up.

He doesn't necessarily need to start in Hartford if the coaches believe he's ready. They can test Fasth in scrimmages and see where he stands.

Don't know how you can test that without game time situation. Is there?

I guess this could be very complicated and we don't know what could happen.

The NHL and IIHF is in no ways connected, they are autonomous. But there are understandings to respect each others suspensions for example after on ice disciplinary matters (you get suspended 3 games in the SEL in the last game of the season, you gotta sit in the NHL).

To complicate it even more, the NHL got a deal here with the Swe fed.

A lot of people were on his @$$ after he had only a point per game last year, so I guess he's trying to prove all the haters wrong. Let's hope he can keep it up. I think it's very important to be able to dominate in your last playoff run as a sign that you've outgrown the level you are at and to show that you can play at physically tougher, more defensive and higher quality level of hockey (no crappy non-playoff teams).
