Extended OT vs Shootout: AVG time

I'm not a numbers guy at all, but the shootout vs tie argument is one that has been ongoing since the 2006 season.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows how long a shootout takes on average, and whether or not 5 minute OT + shootout would take up that much more time than a 10 minute OT or 20 minute OT?

Thanks guys.

Probably not as much as a 20 minute OT but less than 10;

A 5 minute OT takes on average 7 and a half minutes when no goals are scored (remember no TV timeouts). A shootout takes 3-5 minutes from the end of OT just to get started with the flooding. Then there's the minimum 4 shots which take 15-20 seconds each.

Once you factor in that OT can end any given time, a 10 minute OT would be quicker than a shootout.

Interesting discussion. Along with it goes: With a 10-minute OT (I favor this, btw), do you have to make ice because the ice from the 2nd intermission won't stand 30 minutes of play?

And, if you decide "no" and that therefore a 10-min OT will be the new rule, is it 5 skaters or 4?

I don't suppose there's a stat recorded somewhere for goals scored per minute? 5 minutes really isn't a lot of time to score a goal but maybe that's the point.

Page 9 of this article (I think it's page 9) gives generic scoring rates for all combinations of skaters 6v5, 5v5 etc.
