Assuming the Giants win the lottery, I think they'll take Benson. If they pick second, they'll then go for Clague. I've seen his numbers, but how is he on the defensive side of things?

On the other hand, I wonder if Matt Barzal is a road the Giants might try to go down? Still hasn't signed for Seattle as far as I know.

His defence is fantastic, he reminds me of Ryan Murray. Smooth skater, high iq, never panicks, great passer.

Regina won the draft lottery, bumping them up to #2. Vancouver will have the first overall pick.

Good to know. Will be interesting to see how the Giants go about this.

Barring some huge unforeseen curve ball the Giants will absolutely draft Tyler Benson, no question about it.

I realize you are just posting the list used from the WHL website, but I wanted to point out that is Vancouver's pick as well from the Musil trade.

Barzal is a '97 and went 1st overall last year so he shouldn't be included in this list !

6. Lethbridge Hurricanes - Quennville
7. Everett Silvertips - Jost
8. Seattle Thunderbirds
9. Kootenay Ice
10. Medicine Hat Tigers
11. Victoria Royals

1. Vancouver Giants - Benson (Franchise forward... definitely worth the pick... have not had a player like him since Brule...)
2. Regina Pats - Clague (I think Pats will end up taking the risk... can transform the team)
3. Prince George Cougars - Patrick (I think they will scoop Brandon)
4. Brandon Wheat Kings - Steel (Really think this would be a nice fit... extremely gifted forward to lead the offense like the days of Glennie-Schenn)
5. Moose Jaw Warriors - Howden (Yeah no brainer)
6. Lethbridge Hurricanes - Quenneville (They're pretty much set up front... have some promising big kids on the blueline... I don't believe Erkamps is a premier WHL puck mover... will need one to feed Estephan and the other forwards)
7. Everett Silvertips - Fabbro (Don't have any franchise potential defensemen... if they are going to rebuild start from the backend)
8. Seattle Thunderbirds - Jost (Older forward group... TBirds could use a potential star talent)
9. Kootenay Ice - Kaelen Anderson (A good kid who can shoulder the load both on and off the ice the next few years)
10. Medicine Hat Tigers - White (They will pretty much have to if he is on the board at 10... incredible natural ability but you wonder about the rest of it)
11. Victoria Royals - Hannoun (Remember Chilliwack... this kid may be short in stature right now but he can carry a team... Royals need that)
12. Swift Current Broncos - Malenstyn (Can give the Broncos a bit of everything up front... have some nice young pieces and Malenstyn would fit their scouting philosophy...)
13. Prince Albert Raiders - Aucoin (Could have the highest potential of any kid not named Benson or Clague... definitely a bit one dimensional but what a dimension...)
14. Red Deer Rebels - Steenbergen (Hometown boy... good two way player... think he could be a team building block both as a player and a person)
15. Tri-City Americans - Kryski (Extremely talented... Americans typically build their game plan around dynamic players like this)
16. Spokane Chiefs - Barberis (Think he can be a solid cornerstone...
good skater and hits well... has a bit of everything for a blueline that will need that soon)
17. Brandon Wheat Kings via Saskatoon Blades - Jevne (One of the underrated kids in this class in my opinion... Wheaties love their power forwards... could be a top liner in the Dub)
18. Calgary Hitmen - Phillips (Hometown boy, fifth in MVP voting... gives complete efforts every night... good skill package)
19. Kamloops Blazers - Skinner (Might be a bit high but the Blazers have crap all for goaltending in the pipeline... really wild upside... I think history would look favorably back on this pick if this is what Kamloops did)
20. Vancouver Giants via Edmonton Oil Kings - Volcan (If the Giants are going Benson first they should find him a conscientious partner for the future... love Volcan and he is a worker)
21. Kelowna Rockets - Josh Anderson (The Rockets are great at molding future D... Anderson has a ton of tools to work with)
22. Seattle Thunderbirds via Portland Winterhawks - Thiessen (Has the leadership traits and wide array of skills to contribute in a bunch of ways even if he cannot translate his offense)

Delta Wild Academy is at the Midget AAA level so yes, the next level down from Major Midget. Saw them play (Ronning wasn't playing that game though, I think he was injured) and they are pretty decent. They would be top end of flight 1, PCAHA, if they played in the league.

Great job on the list who do you think is the best player that will slip to the 2nd round?

Kale Clague - D Lloydminister
33GP 11G 23A 34PTS 44PIM
5' 11" 150lbs
An early favourite with good size and a terrific stride. Great both ways.

David Quennville - D SSAC Southgate Lions
32GP 16G 28A 44PTS 44PIM
5' 7" 155lbs
Northern conference AMBHL defenseman of the year. Terrific offensively and dependably defensively. Good penalty killer and a perfect powerplay quarterback. Impressed at the 2012 Westerns.

Dante Fabbro - D Burnaby Winter Club
Very impressive at Westerns. Mobile and terrific puck mover with a good shot. Played PP and PK on a stacked team. Great hockey sense and vision.

Matt Barberis - D Burnaby Winter Club
Quick and mobile. Good puck mover with a decent physical game.

Tyler Benson - F SSAC Southgate Lions
33GP 34G 50A 84PTS 44PIM
5' 10" 165lbs
Big forward with great hands and great vision. Works well in small spaces and can thread traffic with his passing. AMBHL North Rookie of the Year.

Sam Steel - F Sherwood Park Flyers
33GP 26G 24A 50PTS 10PIM
5' 7" 135lbs
Incredibly quick and elusive. Has amazing hockey sense and a decent defensive game. Top level hands and vision. Had a great second half to the season.

James Miller- D Spruce Grove PAC Saints
28GP 0G 12A 12PTS 26PIM
5' 11" 133lbs
Terrific skater with great transition game. Has good gap control and plays with an edge. Played on a weak team this year and should benefit from playing with a strong returning group next year.

Alex Rotundo - F Edmonton Knights of Columbus Squires
33GP 23G 17A 40PTS 40PIM

Tyler Steenbergen - F Red Deer Rebels Black
33GP 18G 30A 48PTS 48PIM
5' 9" 142lbs

Jaeger White - F Medicine Hat Hockey Hounds
32GP 28G 23A 51PTS 16PIM
5' 8" 146lbs
Benson dominated the Alberta League, breaking Ty Rattie's scoring record of 131 points by 15, with 146 in 33 games.

Shaw in AB... Ward in BC... Kubic in MB... Legien in SK.

Mentioning next year... I wonder if we will see SSAC go three in a row for top five picks... Estephan, Benson... and Josh Paterson. Love his raw potential... terrific vision... soft hands... really the only other SSAC forward who made you think he was even close to Benson. Think he will be close to 6'1 6'2 when he gets to the Dub and with his skill package that is going to be a deadly major junior player.

EDIT: Also from the '99 class... Peter Kope on CAC was the only player I saw get under Benson's skin all year... nasty kid... if he can ride the line between legal and penalty a little more he has a chance to be a player... bit like a smaller Haydn Fleury... hopefully he grows in the summer...

I was thinking the same thing, although with Benson and the 20th pick and their strong young core this ream will be one to watch in 15.

In 14 I can see them winning 30 games which is 9 more than the 21 they won this year.

I think Benson is a lock for 1st and agree that they could and maybe should make a play for Barzal.

Seattle can't risk losing him to the NCAA for nothing and he is ready for primetime in the WHL right now.

Nice list mine would be a lot the same. Im not a fan of teams picking hometown kids in the first round, it puts a lot of pressure on them especially in smaller cities like Med Hat or Red Deer. Ialso like Mcdonald as a first rounder but i don't who you would bump out, so many good players this year. Van should make out very good withe something like 8 picks in the first 2 rounds.

Where would you slot in the American kids? I have no idea which ones are NCAA committed, but there are some 1st round kids from down there. Lindgren could be the 2nd best D man while Bellows may be the best pure scorer available.

Kinda off topic , but I don't see why the U16 Program is so expensive. Not sure what its like in Alberta or Manatoba, but its $270. for the first weekend. They will have over 160 players and 45 goalies.
So week one alone in the Lower mainland is a cash flow of $56,375.00

This does not include the Island, Interior, and Northern BC. The next camp the following week, is 575.00 and they take 160 players from all over. $92,000. Can someone explain why its so much money ?

All those regional teams are a cash grab for the provincial hockey associations. The better you do the more you pay, it is a genius system that has parents lined up for their kids to tryout. I really like Team Pacific for U17(i think). They have tryouts with eight teams worth, 4 North and 4 South, in Alberta only. But the players that played U16 for Team Alberta the year before don't have go and save some money. Team Pacific is made up of half AB and half BC. Mostly this team is made up of the players that got the exemptions. Parents are paying up to $1K to try out for maybe one position.

How do you think they operate and pay their staff? That is the only way I can explain why it is so much.

Ouch! That's a lot of $$$$

In Manitoba it's $100 for the first round (top 136) and then $400 for the second round (top 40)

Now I'm glad I actually live in Manitoba ! Hahahaha
( We still have 3 feet of snow on the ground !!! )

That $1K would be for two rounds and then making the team. I am not positive if they pay after they make the team though.

BTW, we have about 3 feet of snow too. Trying to swing in the house.

You are right it is a cash grab but ice time is very expensive in the lower mainland with lots of adult leagues that the kids have to compete with.
