he was in his 3rd pro season at 23, his waiver exemption was done, and he still looked like a kid out there playing with men. It's perfectly understandable that no-one wanted to give him an NHL spot. The weird thing though was that there were two expansion teams in 2000... neither of them wanted to take a flyer on a former first-round pick? Really (though probably lucky for briere, that might've sunk his career for all we know)?

Not saying he is even in the running but are there any players drafted higher than Hickey to be waived without playing a single game with the team that draft him?

Sorry but this also applies to Nabakov, because he isn't a bigger waive as a goaltender than Chris Osgood, who has HHOF numbers. Now whether he gets in or not will be another story, but it won't be because he doesn't measure up.

Osgood is often underappreciated but he is a very big name to have been waived during his career and with his credentials.

In 1999 Steve Sullivan was waived by the Maple Leafs.

Edit: Oops - didn't see this mentioned already.

I agree with the person who's already posted this.

Not the best but significant, Rich Peverley was picked off waivers by Atlanta, I believe.

How is it easily MSL? He had 18 points in 56 games when he was waived.

Edit: sorry, they bought him out after that season. Either way, my point stands.

Ray Whitney was waived by the Mighty Oilers. Yep that's right folks, Ray Whitney was deemed not good enough for the 1998 Oilers who put him on waivers nine games into the season. Oilers craptastic management gave up on a lot of talented players in the mid to late 90's and this one ranks up there as one of the worst.

Perhaps 5-time 30-goal scorer Ray Sheppard?

That is actually what waivers were back then, I know because I almost responded the same way but when I looked it up, he was in fact waived, you had to put in a buck to claim somebody. At least that is how I understood the searched article that gave that answer.

This is the key point. There are a lot of players that bounced around and then suddenly became much better than they were. Knuble for one. So everyone saying St. Louis is meaningless. No one has a crystal ball. But I think that the original idea was who was the biggest or best player to be waived at or close to their prime. Most of you won't remember this but the name that sticks out to me is Ed Giacomin.

Bryzgalov getting waived was a HUGE deal at the time.

He's not the best player, but the Nordiques waving Martin Gelinas in 1993 was absolutely retarded. He was claimed by the Canucks, helped them immediately in the playoffs and had a couple of 30+ goal seasons for them and a long career.

Some great players get waived late in their careers, but Gelinas was a young player on a bad team that they had just traded for him and was waived as an example to the other players to motivate them. It failed miserably.

I forgot about him. That move was really dumb.

Remember Rejean Houle saying something along the lines of the Habs having too many similar players in the system alluding to Mike Ribeiro?
