The way Stepan "looks" on the ice; how he Is playing the game, the spots he is picking to be in, the choices he's making with the puck, now in his 3rd pro season remind me a lot of the way he "looked" leading his WJC team to gold in the 2010 series vs. players of his age group and younger.

Hopefully what we are witnessing now is what we hoped he would be, those of us that were attentively watching that series.

Can't comment on his Wisconsin days, didn't see any games then.

He's come a long way, he might have hit a super rich vein of form, but he's doing all the little things well and his game looks pretty good in all 3 zones right now.

He uses his vision defensively to cut off passes, or at least make them look available and then take them away.

Exactly this, for me as well.

Also, to a lesser extent his one trip to the WC where he played with Wheeler and was a ppg.

Yeah, I'm glad nobody liked Stepan when he was drafted. Here was some nobody we never heard of who likes Glee and tap dancing. Let's make fun of him complete with facepalm at the end of the sentence.

So this 22 year old kid is now on pace for 64 points over 82 games this year. He's top-20 among centers in scoring, which kinda means he's played like a first liner so far, doesn't it? It's not as if he's a one-way perimeter scrub. He's a good player in all three zones, so being top-20 in scoring among centers means a lot.

MN boy (former Wild season ticket holder - full disclosure lol) here postin' from the East Side of St. Paul (home of Herb Brooks) to say I like watching your club what with all our natives you have on your squad. Also Gabby still my favorite player on the planet.

Hope you do well; played against the youth club of Hastings (same city) and NHLer Jeff Taffe - Hastings - home of Derek Stepan and think Derek's got some good skills.

Best of luck.

can't believe anybody thought this guy was worth trading before. he always showed this ability to make a play (albeit less frequently)(and he's an NHL playmaker-- not just AHL )

so funny

steps

is a very good player right now at a young age. he has the IQ and the hands. if he improves his skating he is going to be very special to watch. especially paired with nash going forward.

I think Stepan is developing the way you like to see a player do it.
Tonight, the first goal said it all (not like I haven't noticed before) but he forechecked, stripped the puck, looked around and made the right plays.

One thing I notice about his is that he does not really telegraph what he is going to do. Look at that shootout goal the other night, that was a very non-standard move he made. Nobody could tell what he was going to do.

I've always loved Stepan's game, from the first time I saw him in the WJC. So glad that he wasn't traded. I would hate, absolutely hate, if he had gone to Columbus, or anywhere else.

Anyone have hot sauce?

Though, I was no part of the wagon that wanted him shipped out of here. I thought his skating and shooting was awful earlier in the season, but those two things never made me want him off the team. As a matter of fact, I defended him staying on the team because of his 96 points in his first two seasons here while some people tried to make it seem as if it was irrelevant.

Today, he truly played like a boss. Here's to you, Stepan:

He's a stud.

He was everywhere defensively and made TONS of smart plays. If Hagelin pots the breakaway that's 5 points for Steps. Beautiful pass to Nasher, and good awareness to bat the puck in on his goal.

Love this kid.

It was true on January 30. It's still true today. So, while he's been playing great over the last 20 games or so, it's still too small of a sample size. He's done some great things and I have no reason to doubt that they will continue. I'm just not going to pretend like this is definitely going to last for the rest of his career. I definitely hope so.

He has been our best forward overall this season so far. Nash has been great offensively but Stepan has been great offensively and defensively. One of our best PKers! Watching him and Cally on that 5 on 3 versus... The Capitals..? was inspiring!
