The Cardinals who already have the number 1 farm system in the MLB get the Brewers 17th pick. Damn.

Happy he got signed, not happy it was the Brewers, but I'll take the extra 1st.

I don't think this puts MIL any closer to CIN or STL though. Still battling with the Pirates for 3rd.

The Brewers have learned nothing from Jeff Suppan, Braden Looper, Doug Davis or Randy Wolf.

The 17th pick is indeed forfeited, Milwaukee's first pick in the draft won't be until the 50s.

I don't think Lohse is worth that contract to begin with, but the pick is just salt on the wound there. Milwaukee's farm system is pretty poor and extremely lacking in high ceiling players. I know they've been pretty consistent with the buying thing for a while, but this is still a team that's going to be fighting for the Pirates for 3rd in the Central.

I hate MLB's free agency system.

Sucks for Lohse. He was hoping for a bigger payday in a free agency that was thin on pitching.

Dude got $33 million despite having a career WHIP of 1.369...sorry if I refuse to feel sorry for him.

Edwin Jackson got $52 mill. He's marginally better than Lohse. That was the type of payday Lohse was looking for.

I'm pretty sure he turned down around 13m or something via the Cards qualifying offer as well.

I don't think Jackson is better than Lohse. Lohse was pretty good for the Cardinals other than his abysmal 2010. He's a solid #3. Jackson probably has better stuff but he's just extremely inconsistent.

The problem is so many of these guys leave Dave Duncan and go back to being below average or garbage. Suppan, Marquis, Looper, Piniero, etc. Although Lohse did have the best year of his career last year with Lilliquist.

The only disaster I can think of was Kip Wells but I suppose even Duncan needs a shred of ability to work with....

Well, Lohse is 34. Jackson is still in his 20s.

And Mike Maroth.

And Sidney Ponson too, kinda. He started off hot then June came and he became the worst pitcher in baseball. Then he was cut a month later when they acquired another Duncan reclamation project who I forgot to mention in Jeff Weaver.

Wells, Maroth and Ponson are the only 3 he couldn't work his magic with.
