This is simply a fantasy topic for fun. As you can see Habs have a lot of forwards. Even though Dumont wants to play here, but there's no place. Here, I'm dreaming Habs using the 'Torpedo' system.
Team would be composed of 4 pairs of torpedoes, 3 pairs of half-backs and 4 defensemen.

Samsonov-Kovalev
Dumont-Ryder
Perezhogin-Kostitsyn
Begin-Murray
Extra:Latendresse, Downey

This dude in the Swedish elite league invented it. It's supposed to be used on Olympic ice, but I suppose it could be adapted to the new NHL rules. The Swedes beat Canada with it in the round robin in 2002. Kicked our butts actually. I think that was partly Curtis Joseph's fault though. That's the game that saw the changeover to Brodeur as Team Canada's starter (should have happened sooner if you ask me, but Pat Quinn was the coach so what do you expect).

I just took a closer look at it and it's actually pretty cool. I could see a radical coach trying it out in the next few years, followed by everyone else having to do it so they can counter it
The torbedos in this system is supposed to do crazy forchecking to prevent structured build up from the opposing teams defence and to make more room in the middle by forcing the opposing defence to abandon their own blueline when they don't have the puck.
All you need is stamina strength and good skating, putting someone like kovalev in such a role is a waste imo.
You won't get pressure situations but more odd man rushes if the system works. It's all based on counter attacking and forcing the opposition to make errors.
The team who used it in sweden don't use it anymore because it became predictable.
No to the torpedoes. I say we sign back Zarley Zalapsky and go back to the old trusted Left-wing-lock played with 3 d-man. If Zalapsky isn't available (or is dead), Streit and Dandenault could do just fine
Actually the coverage in DZ is similar to what's done in a regular system;
Instead of having 1 C supporting the 2 D's down low you have 1 D supported by 2 halfbacks.
The system was first developped by Anatoli Tarasov (Father of russian hockey).
On the attack it's amazing because instead of attacking using a triangle you have 1 more option (using a square shape). And you don't have 2 waves on the attack, but 3.
By the way, I don't think Ribeiro would be a good halfback since the halfbacks have the biggest roles in that system (support the attack + help out your D in your zone); you need good anticipation and fast starts...
Bowman tried it with the Red Wings few years ago but could only do it with the russian lines. North American skaters could not get it (I remember Darren McCarthy joking about it).
Pretty funny system but I like it. Sometime you use like Samsonov Kostitsyn or Perezhogin with Koivy Kovalev and Markov and it could bring a lot of offense. You need fast player a good defensive D or a passing D-man and 2 player who can bring offense and are safe in D-zone. It could be fun to use it sometime and all time in a pre-season game. Or we can use it for some game during the season so the other team have more thing to see on tape and they're completely lost in our game style.
I really like it and I think it's good with the kind of player we've. No Ryder in this kind of system for sure... Playmaking speed some safe d-men.. We can try.
Goal in hockey is to score more goal then the opponents not to allow less.

but i think only fo a few shifts...
i wouldnt use 4 defenceman though but rather 6 and have 3 adobt th role of a half back

I think a hybrid form is more doable because just having one defenseman commited to defense is risky, where as if you shift a fast defenseman with good passing and offensive skills to the halfback during a rush and then shift back to a traditional position when defending of backchecking
i think the torbedo is good for forechecking and going on the attack but risky defending and backchecking especially considering there are not too too many skilled speedy defenseman out there (niedermeyer, markov, Hannan, redden, kaberle)[not saying these guys are of the same skill btw] but those guys can move fast, have pretty decent offensive skills and abover average defensive skills
Yea, I heard about the Torpedo system before. Interesting concept, really, and it is supposed to work well with the two line pass. But, IMHO, this system requires very good centers and puck moving defensemens, and we don't really have that.
