Sidney Crosby close to accomplishing feat not seen in the NHL since Gretzky in 86-87

1987 is the last time an NHL league leading scorer (Gretzky with 121) had as many assists as the next leading scorer (Jari Kurri with 108) had points.

We are two thirds of the way through the season and Crosby (39 assists) is close to matching the number two leading scorer's (Stamkos 43 points) point total on assists alone.

The last time this was even close to happening was in 1990-91 when Gretzky had 122 assists and the 2nd place leading scorer (Brett Hull) had 131 points.

Crosby's statistical dominance should be noted. It should really be treasured a lot more than it is, considering that his career looked to be possibly threatened mere months ago.

edit:
Apologies, I was not "of sound mind" when I posted this, and left some uncharacteristic typos.

Should make more sense now.

Also:

To summarize: For the leading scorer in the NHL to tally as many assists as the 2nd leading scorer has points is an incredible feat. Gretzky did it many times, I think Bobby Orr may have done it.

It hasn't been done since 87 (Gretz). Crosby has a shot at it this year.

Nobody is saying Crosby is as good as Gretzky. I'm a Canucks fan, I'm not a Penguins homer (I like them, but they're not even my 2nd team).

Let's just give credit where it's due, okay?

Pretty impressive feat...

Can't think of anyone else but him who would do something crazy like that...

I'm pretty sure next week he'll have the Hart trophy all locked up XD

Kurri only had 108 points, that 9 was a mistake. Gretzky scored 75 more points than Kurri, incredibly.

Make it a thread when it actually happens. As it stands now four players have more points than Crosby does assists. Oh and * (shortened season).

trying to frame crosby into gretzky based on a 30 game pro rated pace is insane.

There are still 14 games left and 4 scorers have more pts than he has assists. Not to mention this season is 48 games long. How is he close?

Yeah, that's my thought. It's impressive, but not as impressive as doing it in a full season.

Gretzky > Lemieux, Howe, other players in that category
Gretzky >> Crosby (so far, but MAYBE Crosby will turn that >> into > one day)
Gretzky >> everyone else

that said, that would be one helluva feat for Crosby, shortened season or not.

> inb4 "secondary assist" Criesby

What the hell. How is this what is happening anywhere near what Gretzky did?

33 games to the season and Crosby is still behind 4 players in assist/point race.

He has been incredible tough. Definitely deserves the praise for being injured for so long. But come on! This is why some posters here get so sick of Crosby.

Am I crazy or is Crosby the king of the secondary assist? I don't know how many times I've watched a Pens games and they've had a goal and Crosby got a secondary assist without me noticing. I don't know if it's a testament to his greatness/doing the subtle things or if the kid was just born with a silver spoon in his mouth or both.

I'm actually not sure if Crosby played at the same as Gretzky, who would end up with more pts. Back then you could be a smoker and score 60G a year ( Guy Lafleur ).

Not only that but Crosby has only 11 more pts than Kunitz which is 25% more. Gretzky had around 69% more pts than Kurri.

Yeah right like if Crosby is the only player in the top 10 to get secondary assists. Give it a break.

Since then, Crosby has added 3 primary and 1 secondary assist. I don't have the other players updated, other than St. Louis, who adds 3 primary and 2 secondary. So 27 primary assists for Crosby. St. Louis has 34 total assists this year. Getzlaf and Letang are tied for 3rd with 25 total assists.

Crosby's scoring log for proof.

People always try to lump Crosby in with Lemieux and Gretzky for greatness and feats when they really shouldn't. It does a disservice to all because to me all the forwards that Sid has a chance of equaling or bettering the careers of are names like Forsberg, Lindros, Jagr, Selanne, Jagr, Sakic, Yzerman, Messier, Trottier, Lafleur, Mikita. Crosby is more of a Marcel Dionne or Jean Beliveau level talent but not a GOAT type... not yet at least. As great as Sid has been, even Gordie Howe dominated the league more than he has so far (but it should be pointed out that Howe didn't get that way until 23 whereas Crosby had already won it all by 23).

I would never say something like that again.... During his career so far, he leads all players in primary:secondary ratio.

I'm sure we can find stats on this, but I'd guarantee that 60% of his assists are primaries this season, probably 2/3'ds. The whole Secondary Sidney thing is just a way that detractors have of rationalizing the fact that, yes, he really is this good.
