The Pittsburgh trade is even worse than the proposed Boston trade.
Calgary got fleeced IMO

I don't get it.

I just don't ****ing get it.

Forgive me for getting emo here, but why are other GMs able to make great moves (in a salary-capped league) while Holland sits on his ass for five years because of "high prices"?

I'm sick of it.

Well, at least we have the Cleary extension to look forward to! Oh, and Samuelsson and Colaiacovo are our deadline acquisitions! How could I forget?

I hope both Pittsburgh, Boston, and Iginla all get killed with fire (aka take first round exits).

Well, Pens gave up:
1st rd pick
2nd rd pick
2nd rd pick conditional (could be 3rd)
5th rd pick
Joe Morrow, 7.5C prospect (Ouellet and Sproul are 7.0C)
Ben Hanowski, 7.0C prospect (Frk/Pulkkinen/Jurco/Sheahan)
Ken Agostino, 7.0C prospect (Frk/Pulkkinen/Jurco/Sheahan)

For:
Three rentals and a 3rd rd pick.

You tell me how this board would react if we traded away Ouellet, Frk, Sheahan and those picks for rentals. People would be up in arms if we didn't win the cup.

First of all, if the Wings were in the Penguins' position, I'd be absolutely fine with them being this aggressive. I'd praise Holland for it.

Second of all, Iginla will probably re-sign with Pittsburgh, giving Crosby an elite winger for the next 2-3 years.

Third, veterans-for-futures trades usually sound worse than they end up being at first. These trades rarely bite teams in the ass. Think of Kovalchuk and Hossa.

We'll see how they handle the re-signings, that changes a lot but has little to do with the initial trade. Pitts have $10M in cap space to sign Iginla, Morrow, Kennedy, Cooke, Dupuis let alone re-sign Murray.

I think they did well on the Iginla trade, but gave up a lot in the other deals.

My post was more giving some perspective to fans who see the star players and don't know anything about the small pieces. Pens didn't get away free.

And Malkin is a UFA the following off-season.

So the silver lining for the Wings is a possibility of signing Malkin.

..Like you said on the last page of this thread. We're not an Iginla away from being a big name contender. If we were in Boston/Pitts shoes, KH should be making these moves.

But we aren't in their shoes. Are we expected to give up big parts of our future for rentals at this point? The situations are a lot different. Pitt and Boston have relatively young cores compared to us. They can make pushes like this and not be bottom feeders later because the core is locked up.

For Detroit and Holland, in order to stack up the team at the deadline we give up significant assets from the near future in addition to having an old core. Z/D are aging and we're trying to rebuild on the fly.

In Holland's eyes, our options are this. Pull a Shero, stack the team and try to win another cup before many years of Calgary-esque mediocrity OR hold pat with a playoff position for the 22nd straight year AND keep assets to help attempt keep us a playoff team in the future.

I'm not saying either one is the right path. What if Pittsburgh doesn't win the cup? Hilarity ensues, but they're still a contender because of the core. What if Detroit didn't after making similar moves? We're left with nothing to show and less assets to return to contention in the future.

Were you drinking last night? I am as likely to sign with the Red Wings as Malkin is and I play the lowest levels of beer leagues.

It's hard to make bargain bin trades when Jarome Iginla does not have you on his list.

If anything, if Holland's out to make moves as he said he would, Shero is helping GMKH in such a big way by nabbing these rentals at such low prices. If Sather's out to move Gaborik, he's probably crying right now. Feester also can't jack the prices up on Bouwmeester anymore as well.

Leopold to STL for 2nd and cond. 5th.

IMO it seems like they're not in for JBO as rumored/speculated by some.

edit.

Roger Millions ‏@RogMillions 7 min
Had heard #Blues would go to Leopold if they could not ante up for Bouwmeester. Tight budget in St. Louis

I wonder if Tortorella will get another head coaching job after he gets fired in New York.

Jackets and Blues win. Bad for us. We lose.
The Preds are done, they have no chance to make playoffs.
The Jackets won, but I still think they won't make it.
