Any guys at the AHL level that are worth taking a shot on, ala Atkinson and Palmieri?

Atkinson is playing 15 minutes a night with Columbus.

I think it all depends on the defection level which is likely to be high. Frankly I'd rather take a group of young players than some low ceiling European based players if the NHL guys so no. Certainly I'd rather take guys like Emerson Etem over Ryan Lasch.

I referenced Atkinson and Palmieri because those were two of the big achievers last year in the AHL, and both joined the national team. I was asking if there were any comparable AHL players blowing up with American passports, this year.

Etem will definitely be with the Ducks. He hasn't quite locked down a job here completely, but he's pretty close to doing that.

Any chance Seth Jones gets asked?

Ryan Murray was on Team Canada last year...but there was a last minute injury.

I think it's likely one of Jones or Trouba is on the team.

Also, Tampa's newly appointed head coach - Jon Cooper - is another potential coach. He's a dual citizen but has coached for Team USA in his career.

I suppose Jeremy Morin gets a consideration if the roster defections start up. He's top 20 in AHL scoring with 47 points in 57 games. Hardly revolutionary but a guy like JT Brown made the team last year and isn't matching that scoring in the AHL. If the defection level is high I suppose he has a chance. Another guy doing well in the AHL is Brock Nelson: 43 in 54.

I am looking forward to see if Tampa Bay would let Tyler Johnson play for the US...that kid on the big ice is magic to watch. He is having a great start to his early NHL career, though brief in amount of games...I think he is the type of player the US should try and covet for this tournament...young and speedy with grit and skill...

some players that I would love to see on this USA squad right now if standings hold up :

Nate Gerbe
Tyler Johnson
Drew Stafford
Drew Shore
Peter Mueller
John Carlson
Aaron Palushja
Erik Johnson -see how he looks in a #1 dman spot

all pretty realistic names that would be welcome additions from what we normally have to pull to get..

I also concur that we will see either Jones or Trouba as well as possibly Gaudreau...just my gut tells me that kid will get a chance with this team this year.

Yikes, Gerbe and Stafford have been healthy scratches for a bad Buffalo team this year. That's a very bad sign.

The real test will be whether Ryan Miller accepts an invite. Assumine he's still on the Sabres.

Wouldn't hold out hope for EJ. Seems like over the last couple years he's found any excuse not to play in the Worlds. He's not as bad as Umburger, but it's been bad.

I haven't seen a ton of rockford this year...but i'd be surprised if morin is good enough for the wc.

...although it would be great if he made it. he hasn't gotten time with the hawks and seems buried down the depth chart so it would be a great opportunity for him.

because i'm lazy...does anyone know if the mem cup is over by the time wc begins? i.e. will seth jones be available in any event - or is it it possible he'll still be in the playoffs. any chance that trouba gets an invite?

I think this could be a year of fairly high defections. The one advantage is that it's a year before the Olympics so guys are going to be looking to impress, but otherwise the logistics are bad for player enthusiasm. I don't want to see Jeremy Morin on this team, but if we are taking guys like JT Brown again, Morin is at least in the conversation, although he's probably behind a guy like Tyler Johnson who AD brought up.

the whole Sabres team is bad and the usually make statements by sitting players who have underperformed...Stafford has missed what 1 or 2 games because of being scratched, hardly earth shattering...same with Gerbe. Stafford just put up a goal and assist last game, message received. your acting like there is better realistic options out there over Gerbe and Stafford...sadly there isnt. if we can get those guys to go along with some younger skilled guys like Ty Johnson, Shore, Mueller, Atkinson, etc I think this team will be exciting to watch.

I would take Stafford and Gerbe 100 out of 100 times for this team as I dont want to see the Mike Browns of the world dominate our team.

we are not getting Miller, zero chance. EJ is the most likely top dman we will get outside of JJ as he has a ton to prove and seems to be one of those guys on the outside looking in for the Olympics, he has no excuse this year not to come.

obviously I am a big fan of Morin, but I am hoping that it doesnt come to that to fill out this roster. Morin still has a bright future ahead and would be in the NHL on 90% of the other teams in the league. he brings a ton of grit and is a sniper, but he hasnt played in the NHL for over a year now and I have to imagine there are younger guys with more NHL experience out there that we can land for this team... again I am a fan of Morin and I think he wouldnt be a bad pick, but my fear is if we have to go to the AHL to get guys, Morin is going to be the least of our problems again.

and to be fair to Morin, Tyler Johnson has only been up for a few weeks and I am touting the US squad to go after him hard as he has less overall NHL experience than Jeremy...but I like going with hot hands and a kid like Johnson seems to be doing excellent so far in his first tour of NHL action...that is what makes him more desirable to me.

I think we will see Ron Rolston as the coach for this US team...he has always been loved by USA Hockey and I can see them handing him the torch for this years team. Maybe even add Phil Housley as an assistant...

I also think Tim Thomas comes out of retirement and plays for the US as our #1 goalie as he wants a job for next year!! the Islanders wont make the playoffs and he will need the games to get back into shape, not sure if we would want him as our #1 considering how little he has played, but depending on our options I would gladly take Tim on this team as either a #1 or #2...

I put this in the WJC section and I will put it here as well.

By all accounts, Jacob Trouba will be signing with Winnipeg tomorrow making hima pro player who will likely not be available for next years WJC...

But this also in my mind puts Trouba as an almost lock for this USA WC team as I can see USA Hockey chomping at the bit to see what he can do against pro players. If the signing is legit I think Trouba is playing on this team as it just makes too much sense.

Tough losses for Michigan losing Trouba and Merrill at the same time...hard to replace those two studs.

if the Islanders miss the playoffs, I wouldnt be surprised to see Colin Mcdonald on this US team. Actually very surprised towards his dedication as he could have given up a few years back. Good for him as he is having a solid season, puts up some decent points while not getting a ton of icetime..dude has a history of scoring goals, maybe the late bloomer is finally starting to get it.

He also scored in his first game and was sent back down. Maybe he's not as far off as I think.

Nick Bjugstad is also joining the Panthers right now. Depending on how he finishes the next month with them, I could see him being an asset for this team along with Trouba.
