The Cubs are sticking with their goal to procure talent from every corner of the globe. Today the rumor is they are pursuing Venezuelan SS Gleyber Torres, who wowed scouts recently at an MLB showcase.

One scout described him as a toolsy player with the ability to defend with an above average arm, hit for average, steal bases, and hit around 15-20 HRs per year. For a 16 year old, he doesn't offer a ton of projection but the Cubs like his polished baseball skills. They like him enough, in fact, to invest over $2M to sign him. Because they have the 2nd highest pool allotment, it will be difficult for any team except for Houston to outbid them.

It's a signing that would be consistent with the Cubs recent philosophy of going after athletic ballplayers in the middle of the field -- but ones with advanced skills and a high floor.

Miami will be looking to become Elite tonight. While I am of course rooting for them I am happy with what they have accomplished. A team almost everyone predicted to finish last in the ACC won the regular season and tournament title and made it to the sweet sixteen. An amazing accomplishment for a team few believed in.

16 year old prospects almost never turn out well, but there's always a good chance that they have value during their prospect years.

I'm hoping so bad that the Astros do what they did last year and draft under slot with the 1st pick so they can spend later in the draft. Appel may start for the Cubs next season.

Yeah, I love Appel. It's down to him or Manea at this point.

I've seen Manea falling out of the top 10, he's been having a bad year. If Appel is gone, I just have a feeling they take the best position player available (unless Johnathan Grey continues to blow up).

Appel was always the guy, it was just a question of health. Let's hope the Stros pass.

He's definitely not having a bad year. The kid has a .84 ERA and a 41 to 10 K to BB ratio while playing a good non-conference schedule.

The reason he fell on some mocks was because of an ankle injury that he's already come back from. He's never moved from KLaw's top 3.

I'm thinking the Astros will go Fraizer at #1. The kid has been on FIRE this year and looks like an absolute star.

Have heard some talk about Jonathan Grey being in contention for #1-1, and Manea falling out of the Top 10. Too rash, or trending that way?

I mentioned those points in a recent draft blog post - I think that's the realistic-pessimistic view on Manaea, and I think Gray is the alternative to Appel at 1-1 right now. Cubs fans should be most excited about Gray, because his emergence would mean, today, that they are guaranteed to get a top-tier college starter who projects as at least a good #2.

If Frazier falls to the Cubs, I expect them to seriously look at him. The kid has a 80 grade for bat speed and is a great athlete.

Theo basically said its safer to take position players at the top of the draft, that they pan out more often then pitchers. If Appel is gone, I absolutely expect them to take him.

I don't absolutely expect it, but I think he's fully in the mix. He's got Tulo written all over him.

Cool cool. I hope I'm not hated for this, and I'll try to keep it short, but I'm a Dodgers fan.

Mom grew up in SoCal, then came to U of I for college, where she met my old man. They had my sister and I, and then moved to Canada, where I live now. My mom's dad was a massive Dodgers fan, and my dad didn't watch baseball but loved hockey, and was a big Hawks fan. Thus, I'm a cornucopia of sports fandom, cheering for the Hawks, Dodgers, Clippers, and Broncos (no idea where that one came from.)

I hope you don't all hate me when the Dodgers go 110-52 and win the World Series.

I don't have a problem with the Dodgers. They have my favorite uniform in baseball and I love listening to Vin Scully.

Vin Scully is amazing. He could just tell stories about ball for hours and I'd listen.

On my way back from the Cubs game. The highlight was meeting Rizzo. Hohokam was pretty nice, but the nea ST facility should be pretty tight.

Here as in 08 when you started posting here, or at least registered....?

Feel free to throw rocks at me, but Scully bores me to tears. Too monotone to listen for a 3 hour game, let alone 162 game season if you're a Dodgers fan. I appreciate what he does, and has done over the years and how great it is... but not my cup of tea.

Scully has no change of tone/excitement, so I'm with Ray on that.

The man is so vivid with his descriptions. Listening to his radio broadcasts is almost as good as watching the game.

Eh, each to their own. I understand not enjoying him, he isn't like Doc Emrick, he's not going to be screaming and excitable. Personally, I like listening to his stories.
