Another mindblowing fact about Gionta:

In games where he has collected points, he has a PPG of 1.36 and the team has a record of 10-2-2.

Some of you guys are too hard on Gio. I loved the pickup right from when I heard about it. He usually gives it his all. He's contributing like he always does, goals and assists, PP, PK, Shutdown role. Gets put into a lot of bad situations on the ice. Every player in the league disappears every now and then. You won't see Gio with a minus 3 on the night like some others. Gio is exactly the type of guy where its games 7 for all the marbles. He would be highly ranked for the guy that might score the winner. Right when you think he's having a quite night. He'll come out of the bushes and stab you right in the back.

This year he is back... Habs challenge for 1st.

He is solid captain material... probably an excellent locker room diplomat too.

The Oilers could use a guy like that.
People are too quick to evaluate players on cap hit and stats and don't factor heart, grit, 2 way play and leadership.

His offense alone doesn't justify 5 mil cap hit but the totality does. You also have to factor that he was brought in as a UFA, those have a 500k-1mil annual premium having multiple teams bidding on them. You are buying the player not just paying him regular market value.

Actually it's the other way around, that's his market value because it get's established by The Market. RFA's you can get below market value because you are usually the only bidder. But besides that excellent post.
