Hrivik was the team's best winger when he got injured, but 2.5 months is a long time. The good news is that he should be back in the lineup on Thursday night. Normally a couple days of full practice is enough to start playing. I hope Talbot will also play on Thursday. Need to stop riding Mission.

NOR, which is in 9th place, is playing a Western conference team tonight, and hopefully will lose, giving CT a little bit of breathing room.

Seemed like they were gonna play Mission until he lost a game just to give Talbot as much rest as possible. But that's weird considering the way AHL schedules are shaped up. Whatever. It's good to know they have a backup who can be reliable.

They may have been trying to give Talbot an extended rest to work on his game with the coaching staff. Hard to work on stuff in practice when you are playing most days. Hank says the same thing. Honestly, that is the best way to do it if you have (2) good goalies. Give them each a couple of weeks to play and then let them practice hard.

This was obviously the plan, but let's have Talbot start at least 2/3 of the way. He's a better goalie than Mission and we are in a very tough playoff fight with only 10 points separating 5th place from the 13th, and only 5 points separating the 6th seed from the 10th.

Mission also has a lot more time to grow. He's over 3 years younger than Talbot. I want to see Talbot, who's more polished, get in as many games as possible (without getting run down) to have very solid experience before he joins the Rangers.

Mission is best served by getting a lot of instruction from coaches in practice and get into a decent number of games.

The Whale keeps winning and its competitors keep losing. NOR lost tonight to a Western conference team. The 9th and 10th place now have 67 points in 65 games, while Hartford has 72 points in 66 games. The 7th and 8th places have one point fewer than Hartford in one fewer game. If Portland loses tomorrow and CT wins on Thursday, we'll be only a point behind the 5 seed (with more extra games played).

Nothing is guaranteed, but this is unbelievably better than when Hartford was looking like it was trying to go for the first overall pick in the AHL draft.

Wonder if Niemi's assignment has anything to do with Conor Allen supposedly coming to Hartford in the next couple of days.

Mixed results today, but mostly good.

- Albany lost, which more or less means, it is out of the playoffs. The Devils have 65 points in 64 games.

- Wilkes-Barrie beat Bingo which means Hartford slipped from 6th to 7th. WBS has one more point in the same number of games.

- Worcester lost to M&Ms (Monarchs). M&Ms are now 9th, three points behind the Whale in the same number of games.

- Hartford is playing Worcester tomorrow, and if it can win, WOR will be eliminated for all intents and purposes. This would mean the Whale can finish no lower than 10th, which in and of itself is not great, but having fewer teams that can take out the Whale is a positive.

- Portland lost and now has 1 extra game and 3 extra points, certainly within range if the Whale plays well.

All in all, good results except WBS beat the much stronger Bingo team.

And they are getting help. Hrivik is back, right?
Conor Allen should be suiting up as well.

From what I understand, Hrivik is back tomorrow. He might take a few weeks to get back in shape. He's been gone for 3 dozen games, almost half a season. That's a long time away. I don't think he'll go back to first line form immediately, but maybe he can add some depth scoring.

Keep in mind that Hartford lost its best forward in Newbury, as well as some others like Miller and Kreider (who are not as good as Noob at the AHL level). There just isn't a lot of scoring talent. Mash can hit, Palm can grind, Yogan can skate, but nobody is a playmaker. Bourque is a good shooter and can create offense, but there aren't any pass-first playmakers left in Hartford.

So apparently McColgan and Nicholls got knocked out of the playoffs so those two along with Allen and maybe even Fasth depending on if he starts with the big club or not will all be with CT soon.

Fascinating.

Their team is in the Memorial Cup in May. They're not going to be with the Whale this year.

They are but what about from now until late April? Can't keep practicing them against each other. Who else are they going to play and what are they going to do?

WHALE WATCHING

Talbot is in the net. Hrivik still not playing.

Penalty on Tessier, stupid call. He barely hugged the opponent who exaggerated it. Penalty killed off and towards the end, Ferriero caused a breakaway for himself, but was harassed enough from the back not to score.

Several difficult saves by Talbot.

Penalty on Worcester. Pyatt looked really good. Nice shot, kept the puck in the offensive zone a couple of times, rushed the puck well.

Penalty on Palm for taking a stick to the face. You didn't misread that. Palm gets him in the face with a stick and somehow gets called for a penalty. The officiating at the minor league level is really horrible.

Talbot is playing very well so far.

Not having Newbury hurts the team a lot.

Penalty on the Sharks for interference late in the period.

FIRST OVER.

You know how much of a gap there is between the NHL and the AHL when Stu Bickel is looking like Scott Stevens out there.

Second period

Thomas scores a PP goal early in the period on a strong snap shot. Tessier screened the goalie who couldn't see anything. Pyatt and Vernace with assists.

Mash runs into the Shark goalie. Should've been called for a penalty, but the officiating is terrible. The goalie was injured and replaced with someone who played only one AHL game before.

As a result of the above, Mash got into a fight against a guy who is 6-7 235, but beat him up easily.

Segal hit from the back. Yogan looks very angry, wanted to fight. Others also jumped in.

PP for the Whale because of the Segal hit. Vernace was in front of the goalie for a second, but ran out space. Segal with a good defensive play.

Bickel fell down for no apparent reason.

Bourque wouldve been so good had he been 6-feet.

Penalty on Palm.

Talbot is really good.

Tessier is having a good game.

Every MCI hit creates thunder.

Thomas plays like he is supposed to: hard shooting, forechecking, defense. Needs to do this consistently and he will play in the NHL. His shot is the hardest in the organization.

END OF TWO.

i wonder why Mash didnt play that gritty game when he was called up to the NYR. i like him as a depth 4th line energy player.

THIRD PERIOD

Another early goal. Palm won the puck behind the net, Yogan and Segal crashed the net. Yogan with a very smart play to push the puck to Segal, who nailed it from up close.

Sharks score, but it doesn't count because the Sharks crashed hard into Talbot, who was essentially tackled. Still 2-0.

More saves by Talbot, who is continuing to prove that he is good good for the AHL (particularly when he is not overworked with 18 straight starts averting 35 shots per game).

Klassen scores his first AHL goal. Hard shot from the point. Didn't know he can shoot this hard. Very happy for Classy! Tessier and Haley with assists. 3-0.

MCI fumbles the puck on his own blue line.

Talbot with another strong save, but a penalty on Vernace. Segal clears. Stu clears. Penalty over.

Another penalty, the 6th for the Whale. Such an undisciplined team.

The whale sweep WOR for the season on a shut out by Talbot. Back to 6th place. This was a tough win. The score doesnt reflect how close it was.

The Whale got at least one point in 16 of the last 21 games.

THREE STARS

1. Talbot: Shut out on 29 shots. Yet another strong game where he makes it look easy.

2. Klassen: Good defense, good PK, physical player who finishes checks, and scored his first goal on a good goal.

3. Segal: Three game goal scoring streak, taking over veteran leadership for Noob.

Honorable Mention - Tessier: assist, screened the goalie on the first goal, great hustle.

Hey Beacon, how well do you think McIlrath and Hrivik would perform if they were called up this season?
